Eric Jonassen played two seasons at Bloomsburg University after transferring in from Penn State University. He was a two-time First Team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East selection in 1990 and 1991 and earned a number of All-American honors during his two-year career. He was a Second Team AP All-American in 1990, a First Team AP All-American in 1991, a two-time First Team Football Gazette All-American, and a First Team AFCA (American Football Coaches Association) All-American in 1991.
 
After his collegiate career, Jonassen was drafted in the fifth round (140th overall) in the 1992 National Football League draft by the San Diego Chargers. He played all 16 games during the regular season for the Chargers in 1993 and 1994 and was a member of the Chargers' AFC Championship team during the 1994 season and participated in Super Bowl XXIX.  After three years in San Diego, Jonassen played two more seasons for the Arizona Cardinals before retiring after the 1997 season.

Jonassen graduated from Temple University in 2004 with a master's degree in health and physical education and has been teaching in the Fleetwood Area School District for 13 years. He and his wife of 24 years, Jennifer, are the proud parents of four children - Seth, Megan, Jake, and Claire. His wife also graduated from Bloomsburg University in 1991.
