Danny Wheelan enters his third season as the Bloomsburg University head men's soccer coach in the fall of 2020. Wheelan replaced Paul Payne who, after 19 seasons at the helm of the program, left as the school's all-time winningest coach.
The 2019 season saw the Bloomsburg University men’s soccer team finish 7-11, which included a 2-0 victory over #18 ranked West Chester. Five Huskies earned All-PSAC East honors, including junior midfielder Carter Luckenbaugh who was also named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region Third Team and the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Scholar All-East Region First Team.
In 2018, the Huskies finished the season 8-9-1. Junior Tyler Madeira named to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Second Team. The junior became the first All-Conference award recipient for the Huskies since Bloomsburg had four selections in 2015.
Wheelan is no stranger to Bloomsburg as he served as Payne's graduate assistant coach during the 2012 and 2013 campaigns while also serving in the same capacity for the women's soccer program in 2012.
He returns to the Huskies' men's soccer program after four seasons as an assistant coach for the women's soccer program at Barry University. During his time with the Buccaneers, he helped the team to a 46-12-8 mark, including 26-4-5 in the Sunshine State Conference (SSC). Barry won SSC regular season titles in 2014 and 2015, along with the 2015 SSC Tournament championship. Barry won the South Region title in 2015 as well, advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time since 2003.
A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, Wheelan was a member of the Scotland Schoolboys Under-18 National team before coming to the United States to play collegiate soccer in 2003. He was a four-year starter and two-year captain at NCAA Division I Loyola University-Maryland where he garnered All-Conference honors and was a member of two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season title-winning teams. After graduation, he returned to Scotland where he played semi-professionally and began his coaching career.
Wheelan currently holds the NSCAA Advanced National and National Coaching Diplomas as well as coaching diplomas from the Scottish Football Association for Kids Level 1,2,3, Youth Level 1,2,3, Goalkeeping Level 1, and a special topics diploma in Coaching Footballers with Disabilities. He is also currently working on his USSF Coaching Licenses.
While at Loyola, he graduated with a degree in International Business in 2007 and completed his Master of Business Administration degree from Bloomsburg in the summer of 2014.
