PHILADELPHIA-- It was successful start to the 2009-10 Bloomsburg University women's basketball season on Monday night as the Huskies scored a 67-45 win over Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia.
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem, Liberty) scored a game-high 18 points and Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg, East Stroudsburg South)added 14 as Bloomsburg, featuring 12 new players, 11 of them freshmen, picked up the victory.
After spotting the home team an early 2-0 lead, the Huskies responded by going on a 21-8 run over a nine-minute stretch of the first half to lead 21-10. Lauren Ellis (Bangor, Bangor) got the Huskies on the board with a layup, then, added five more points in the run for Bloomsburg. Later with the Huskies leading by 11 points, Wieller hit back-to-back three-pointers to put Bloomsburg on top 30-15 with 5:11 to play. The points were six of Wieller's 15 in the first half. Bloomsburg stretched the lead to 20 points at 39-19 on layup by freshmanTanejha Smith (Allentown, William Allen) with seconds left in the half.
In the second half the Huskies pushed to lead to 43-19 early in the period, before the Griffins rallied and cut to within 13 points at 44-31 with 15:31 to play. Bloomsburg responded with a 7-0 capped by a Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland, Tri-Valley) three-pointer to give the Huskies a 20-point advantage and control of the game.
Along with Wieller and Gallagher, Ellis added nine points, while Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland, Hazleton Area) chipped in with seven points and a game-high nine assists. Ericka Furrowh scored 13 points for the Griffins.
Bloomsburg will face Dominican College on Friday at the Nyack College Tournament.
