Football Team Dominant In 23-3 Win over Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG—Bloomsburg University quarterback Pat Carey (Loyalsock, Loyalsock Twp.) threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns and the Huskies defense limited Shippensburg to just 93-yards of total offense as the 20th-ranked Huskies beat Shippensburg 23-3 on Saturday. The win was also the 150th at Bloomsburg for head coach Danny Hale.

Bloomsburg (6-1,4-0 PSAC East) scored on the opening drive of the game with Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna, Pocono Mountain West) leading the way. Quiteh, Division II's leading rusher, carried nine times on the drive for 58-yards, including the final three on the way to end zone to give the Huskies a 7-0 lead with 9:49 to play in the period.

Shippensburg (1-6,0-4 PSAC East) responded on its second drive of the game moving from the Bloomsburg 48-yard line to the Huskies 8-yard line before the drive stalled. The Red Raiders then settled for a 25-yard field goal from Drew Newcomer to make it 7-3.

The Huskies made it 10-3 early in the second half on Daniel Fisher (Liverpool, Central Dauphin) record-breaking field goal. Fisher connected on a 43-yard field goal, the 11th of the season breaking the school single-season mark he shared with Chris Mingrone first done in 1986.

Bloomsburg made it 17-3 right before halftime with the help of a short Shippensburg punt. With the Red Raiders back up to their own 11-yard line, Shippensburg got off just a 14-yard punt giving Bloomsburg the ball at the Red Raider 25-yard line with 39 seconds left in the half. Carey hit Cory Stiger (Williamsport, Loyalsock Twp.) for six yards to the 19-yard line, then, found Ben Weaber (Lebanon, Cedar Crest) in the end zone for touchdown with 21 seconds left in the half.

The third period was scoreless but the story was the play of the Huskies defense holding the Red Raiders to just two first downs in the quarter and 18 yards of offense.

The final touchdown of the day for Bloomsburg came early in the fourth period when Carey hit Chris Tressler (Lewistown, Lewistown) with a 52-yard touchdown pass with 11:52 left to go in the game.

Overall, Carey was 14 of 20 on the day with Stiger catching six passes for 47 yards, while Quiteh finished with 109 yards on 26 carries and the one touchdown.

Defensively the Huskies were dominant after the first period holding the Red Raiders to just 24 yards of total offense over the final three quarters. Shippensburg was also 0-12 in third-down situations for the game and was held without a touchdown for the first time since the 2008 season when the Huskies beat them 21-0. Jarrett Pidgeon (Barnegat, NJ, Southern Regional) led the way with 10 tackles, nine of them solo. He also had 3.5 tackles for loss and one sack in the game.

Hale, already the school's all-time leader in career coaching wins, is now 150-50-1 in his 18 years at Bloomsburg. Overall, Hale is 190-63-1 combining his wins from his five seasons at West Chester.

The Huskies will host West Chester next Saturday at 3:30 p.m.in the annual homecoming game.
