KUTZTOWN--Bloomsburg University's
Lauren McGinley (Wilkes-Barre, Coughlin) scored two goals to lead the charge as the fourth-ranked Huskies field hockey team shutout the No. 5 Golden Bears, 4-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup on Tuesday night.
Bloomsburg (6-2, 2-1 PSAC East) came into the game looking for redemption after two losses in its last three games, while Kutztown (5-3, 2-2 PSAC East) hoped to repeat its success from last year, when the Golden Bears handed the Huskies their only loss of the 2009 season.
The Maroon and Gold controlled the early action, putting three shots on net in the first six minutes and later earning two quick penalty corners, the second of which would prove effective. McGinley scored her first goal of the day in the 13th minute, taking a pass from
Amber Aulenbach (Fleetwood, Oley Valley) and slipping her shot past Kutztown goalie Emily Falko for her third goal of the season.
The Golden Bears had few scoring opportunities as the nearly impenetrable Bloomsburg defense and relentless Husky offense limited Kutztown to just one shot in the first half.
Less than five minutes into the second period, McGinley struck again, this time unassisted. The sophomore found herself on a breakaway and successfully evaded Falko to put the Huskies up 2-0.
Bloomsburg pulled away less than five minutes later when Aulenbach got in on the action and found the back of the cage for her second goal of the season as the Huskies pulled away, 3-0.
The nail in the coffin was struck with just over ten minutes remaining when Bloomsburg capitalized on another penalty corner, and junior
Lindsay Danz (Rehoboth Beach, DE, Sussex Technical) got her first goal of the season to give her team an insurmountable 4-0 lead;
Amanda Riley (Tannersville, Pocono Mountain East) tallied her fourth assist on the year on the shot.
Meghan Hollenbach (Blandon, Fleetwood) had four saves in the game for Bloomsburg and recorded her second shutout of the season.
The Huskies return home to host Slippery Rock University in a PSAC inter-divisional match on Saturday, October 9, at 12 p.m., while the Golden Bears will stay in Kutztown to host #9 Indiana University starting at 11 a.m.
