BLOOMSBURG—
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team to a 76-68 come-from-behind win over West Chester on Saturday in a PSAC Eastern Division matchup. The win puts the Huskies in sole possession of first place in the division with a record of 5-1.
After the start of the game was delayed for two hours by transportation troubles for West Chester on the way to the game, the Golden Rams started quickly in the game jumping out to a 17-5 lead through the first six and a half minutes of action. West Chester would extend the lead to 14 points, 22-8, after a three-pointer by Domnique Adams with 10:59 left in the half. The Huskies briefly trimmed the deficit to seven points on a jumper by
Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) with 4:58 to go, but the Golden Rams would go into the break leading 35-24.
After West Chester scored the first basket of the half to go up 13, Bloomsburg went on a 17-4 run to get within a point at 42-41. Oxenrider was on fire for the Huskies scoring 10 of the team's 17 points in the first five minutes of the half, including two three-pointers.
Bloomsburg tied the score at 44-all on a three-pointer by Gallagher with 14:17. However West Chester responded with a 15-5 run to go back up by 10 points at 59-49.
The Huskies rallied again putting together an 11-3 run with Oxenrider scoring five points to narrow the gap to 62-60 with 5:58 to play. After West Chester hit one of two free throws to lead 63-60,
Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area) and
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) hit back-to-back baskets to give Bloomsburg its first lead of the game at 64-63 with 3:55 to play.
West Chester regained the lead at 66-64 after hitting three of six free throws. But after a free throw from Wieller made it 66-65, the Huskies regained the lead for good with Oxenrider hitting a three-pointer for a 68-66 Bloomsburg lead. Two more free throws for Oxenrider put the Huskies up 70-66.
The Golden Rams would get to within three points at 71-68 with 55 seconds to play, but Bloomsburg would hit five of six free throws, including 4-4 from Oxenrider in the final minute to seal the win.
Along with Oxenrider scoring 26 points, one shy of her career-high, she also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out three assists. Wieller would get 20 points for Bloomsburg with Gallagher adding 11.
West Chester, 13-5, 4-2 in the PSAC East, got 19 points from Allison Hostetter, while Mary Kate Serratelli added 14.
Bloomsburg, 13-5, 5-1 in the PSAC East, will host East Stroudsburg on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Nelson Field House.
