BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University's
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem, Liberty) scored a game-high 27 points but the California, Pa. Vulcans rallied and beat the Huskies, 77-72, on Tuesday night at the Nelson Field House.
After the Vulcans held an early 4-0 lead the Huskies got hot went on a 26-8 run. Wieller was on fire from the outside draining five three-pointers over a five minute stretch to help the Huskies open a 26-12 lead with 12:06 to play in the first half.
Cal rallied and cut the lead down to four outscoring the Huskies 12-2 over the next four minutes of action. Later the Vulcans would tie the score at 34-all on a pair of free throws from Kayla Smith before Bloomsburg ended the half with a three-pointer from
Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg, East Stroudsburg South) to go up 41-37 at the break.
In the second half of action Cal used an 11-4 run at the start of action to grab their first lead since early in the game at 48-45. Bloomsburg answered back with three pointers from
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem, Liberty), Gallagher and Wieller to go back on top 54-49 with 11:58 to play.
The Vulcans would rally once more outscoring the Huskies 12-2 over the next five minutes to take a 61-56 lead. Wieller's layup with 6:09 to play closed the gap back to 61-58 before a layup and a couple of free throws for Cal made it an eight-point game. Later with the Cal lead at nine, 70-61, Gallagher hit a three-pointer and later added two free throws to pull Bloomsburg to within four points at 70-66.
Wieller pulled the Huskies back to within three, 75-72, with 14 seconds left when she hit two three-pointers sandwiched around two free throws from Cal's Amy Johns. But Cal hit a couple of free throws in the final seconds to seal the victory.
Wieller finished with 27 points hitting eight three-pointers, while Gallagher added 18 points for the Huskies now 7-3. Cal, 7-3, was led by Smith with 19 points with Johns adding 17.
Bloomsburg plays at Slippery Rock on Saturday at 1 p.m.
