SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV—The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team improved to 2-0 this season after defeating the Bowie State Bulldogs (0-2), 53-43.
Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) and
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) paced the Huskies with 14 and 13 points respectively.
The Huskies led for the majority of the first half with the Bulldogs claiming leads at the very beginning of the game and at the 7:27 mark. Bloomsburg closed out the final 7:27 of the first half by outscoring Bowie State, 9-4 for a 24-18 lead.
Neither team found much success from the floor in the first half as BU shot 25.8% but managed to limit the Bulldogs to 22.6% shooting. The Huskies did however hit all six of the free throw attempts and outrebounded Bowie State 27-20.
The second half was all Bloomsburg as the Bulldogs never saw a lead again. Bowie State got to within four points of the Huskies but it was as close as they would get for the remainder of the game.
BU would go up by as many as 15 with 4:36 remaining as the Huskies went on a 12-2 run from the 10:21 mark. During the run, Bloomsburg's
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) scored seven points on one three pointer and 4-4 shooting from the charity stripe.
Boiwe State would pull to within six with 29 seconds remaining but made free throws from Wieller and Gallagher gave Bloomsburg a 53-43 win.
Gallagher led the Huskies with 14 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks while Wieller scored 13 and grabbed six boards. Oxenrider finished with nine points while
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) added six points and seven rebounds. For Bowie State, Juliette Turner led the way with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
The Huskies will be back in action on Wednesday, November 16 as they play the University of Sciences in Bloomsburg's home opener. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Nelson Field House in Bloomsburg, PA.
