BLOOMSBURG—
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team to a 65-55 win over Mercyhurst College on Saturday in PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) action.
Bloomsburg, 8-2, 4-2 in the PSAC, led from start to finish, except for one brief tie at 3-3, in the game. After the early tie the Huskies regained the lead on a jumper by
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley), the start of a 10-0 run. Wieller was a big part of the early rally hitting two three-pointers.
Mercyhurst, 3-5, 3-3 in the PSAC, trimmed the lead to just five points, 25-20, on a three-pointer with 4:35 to go in the half. The Huskies though answered with some strong defense holding the Lakers scoreless for the rest of the period while going on a 7-0 run.
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty) drained a three-pointer from the left wing to give the Huskies their biggest lead of the game at that point, 32-20, as the team's went to the break.
After the Lakers opened the second half with basket, the Huskies slowly doubled their advantage to 20 points. Oxenrider started the rally with a pair of free throws then converted a driving layup to make it a 36-22 lead. The junior later drained a three-pointer before Noack's three-pointer pushed the lead to 50-30 with just under 11 minutes to play in the game.
The Lakers though put together a 23-3 run cutting the Bloomsburg lead to 59-53 with under a minute to go. On the Huskies next possession Wieller made two free throws for a 61-53 lead. After the Lakers missed a jumper Oxenrider was fouled on the rebound and promptly hit two free throws for a 63-53 lead. Following a Laker turnover
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) closed out the Huskies scoring with a pair of free throws before a late basket by Mercyhurst made the final margin of victory 10 points.
Along with Wieller's 21 points, Oxenrider finished with 19 points, while Noack added 10 points. Mercyhurst got 20 points from Megan Hoffman, while Nikki Frederickson added 14 points.
The Huskies will be idle for a week for final exams and will play at Chestnut Hill on Monday, Dec. 19.
