PHILADELPHIA, PA –
Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) scored 20 points to pace Bloomsburg University (9-2, 4-2 PSAC) past the Griffins of Chestnut Hill (1-9, 1-2 CACC), 80-64. The Huskies rode a 20 point halftime lead to their fourth straight win of the season.
The Griffins claimed an early 4-2 lead until the Huskies scored nine straight to take a seven point edge. Over the next eight minutes Bloomsburg would outscore Chestnut Hill, 21-11. During that stretch,
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) and
Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) each scored seven points to give BU a 32-15 lead.
Bloomsburg would go on to close the first half by outscoring Chestnut Hill 9-6, to claim a dominant 41-21 halftime advantage. Gallagher and
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) led the Huskies in scoring in the first half with nine points apiece while
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) scored five and pulled down four rebounds.
Credit Bloomsburg's defensive efforts for the 20 point halftime lead as the Huskies forced 15 first half turnovers, leading to 20 points scored off those turnovers. Another large part of BU's first half success was their dominance in the paint as the Huskies scored 26 points in the paint to Chestnut Hill's eight. BU also outrebounded the Griffins 21-10.
Opening the second half with a 9-2 run, Bloomsburg took a commanding 26 point lead. However, the Griffins put together a scoring run of their own, cutting the BU lead to 19 points as they outscored the Huskies 17-10.
From there Bloomsburg took their largest lead of the night by outscoring Chestnut Hill 13-2 over the next 2:49 to take a 72-42 lead. During the nearly three minute stretch, Gallagher scored six points with
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) capping the run with a three pointer.
The Huskies would eventually go on to take today's contest 80-64. Gallagher led all scorers with 20 points and made five steals which was one shy of tying her career high. She now ranks 10th on Bloomsburg's all-time list with 187 career steals.
Oxenrider finished with 16 points, her third straight game scoring in double figures. She is averaging 17.3 points per game in her last three contests. Wieller ended today with 12 points, making it 10 of 11 games in which the Bloomsburg guard has scored 10 points or more. Ellis totaled eight points and a game high six boards while
Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area) dished out a game high six assists.
For the Griffins, Marqesah Spicer led them with 18 points while Lindsay Alexander chipped in 13.
The Huskies will play their final game of 2011 on Friday, December 30 as they travel to take on Georgian Court in Lakewood, NJ. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
