BLOOMSBURG—
Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) scored a team-high 22 points to lead the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team to a 70-61 win over Cheyney University on Saturday. It was the ninth straight for the Huskies who are ranked eighth in the NCAA D-II Atlantic Region.
The visitors got out to an early four point lead on the Huskies, 8-4, before a 10-0 run capped by a three-pointer from
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) gave Bloomsburg a 14-8 edge. The three-pointer was the 80th of the season for Wieller breaking her own school record set last season.
Bloomsburg stretched the lead to 11 points, 27-16 on a free throw by
Courtney Nyce (Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) with 7:41 to play, its biggest lead of the game to that point. After Cheyney briefly got back to within nine points, the Huskies pushed the lead to 13 points on a layup by Nyce that made the score 41-28. The Wolves closed out the half on a 5-0 run to trail by eight at halftime, 41-33.
In the second half Cheyney used an 11-3 run over the first four minutes to cut the lead to 46-44. Bloomsburg though countered with a 9-0 run with Gallagher scoring four points and
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty) hitting a three-pointer to put BU on top 55-44. The Huskies later pushed the lead to 15 points on a pair of free throws by Wieller.
The Wolves rattled off a 9-0 run of their own and narrowed the gap to six, 61-55, with 6:24 to play. Then, with 2:47 to play, a pair of free throws by Gallagher made it a 10 point game at 68-58. Cheyney answered with a free throw, then a layup from Christalee Lynch closing the gap to 68-61. Bloomsburg came back with a layup from Gallagher with 1:06 to play for the final points of the game.
Along with Gallagher's 22 points,
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) scored 12 and Wieller added 11 for Bloomsburg, now 19-5 and 11-1 in the PSAC East. Cheyney, 6-18, 2-10 in the PSAC East, got a game-high 23 points from Nadirah Brown.
Bloomsburg plays at East Stroudsburg on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
