Women's Basketball Team Downs Shippensburg

Huskies Win 65-55 For Sixth Straight Win

SHIPPENSBURG—Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team to a 65-55 win over Shippensburg on Wednesday night in a PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Eastern Division game. The victory keeps the Huskies on top in the PSAC East with an 8-1 record. The eight wins also equal Bloomsburg's PSAC East win total from a year ago with five games to play.

The Huskie jumped out to an early 10-5 lead with Danielle Derr (Dresner/Upper Dublin) scoring four points in the first three and a half minutes of action. The Lady Raiders closed to within a point at 12-11 with 15:50 left in the half before Bloomsburg used an 11-6 run to stretch the lead to 23-17. Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) scored six points for the Huskies in the run.

Later in the half the Huskies used an 8-0 to take its first double digit lead of the game at 31-19 with 5:41 left in the half and then went to the locker room leading by 14 points.

After Bloomsburg scored the first bucket of the second half, Shippensburg rallied scoring the next five points to close within 36-29. The Huskies would later extend the lead back to 12 points when Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) hit a three-pointer with just under 10 minutes to play.

On a cold shooting night for both teams, Shippensburg came back again cut the lead to five points, 48-43, on two free throws with under eight minutes to play. The teams would stay stuck on 48-43 until Gallagher hit a three-pointer with 5:29 to play, then a minute later added two free throws putting the Huskies back on top 53-43.

The Lady Raiders narrowed the gap back to 58-53 with 1:13 to play on a basket by Shawna Wert, but Wieller, Gallagher and Oxenrider combined to hit 5-6 from the foul line in the final minute to give the Huskies a 10-point win.

Along with Wieller scoring 19 points, one above her season average, Gallagher added 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds for Bloomsburg, now 16-5, and winners of six straight. Shawna Wert scored 12 points for Shippensburg which falls to 9-12, 4-5 in the PSAC East.

Bloomsburg will host Kutztown on Saturday at 1 p.m.
