California Downs Bloomsburg in PSAC Semi-Finals

BLOOMSBURG—The California (PA) University Vulcans advanced to the championship game of the 2010-11 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship game with a 77-71 win over Bloomsburg University. The win snapped the Huskies 12-game winning streak. California will now face Edinboro, a 70-58 winner over Millersville, for the PSAC title on Saturday night at 7 p.m at the Nelson Field House.

Bloomsburg raced out to an early 15-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game behind six points from Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) and five points from Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South). Cal came back outscoring the Huskies 13-1 over the next three minutes taking a 17-16 lead on a three-pointer by Ryah Gadson.

After the Huskies regained the lead 24-19 with the help of back-to-back three's from Oxenrider and Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty), the Vulcans rallied and went back on top at halftime 38-35 on a three-pointer at the first half buzzer by Stephanie Michael.

Both teams shot the ball well in the opening half with the Huskies hit 56 percent from the floor, while Cal hit on 51 percent.

In the second half Cal used a 17-4 run to start the half to take its biggest lead of the game at 55-39 with 14:27 to play in the contest. Then later with the Vulcans up by 13, the Huskies cut the deficit down to six points, 62-56, when Danielle Derr (Dresner/Upper Dublin) completed a three-point play wi8th 9:09 to go.

A three-pointer by Cal's Stephanie Michael put the Vulcans back on top by 10, 66-56, with just under eight minutes to play. Bloomsburg though got four free throws from Gallagher and a layup from Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) to close to within four points, 66-62, with 7:07 to go.

But after Cal took a 71-64 lead with 4:46 to play, the Huskies hit a dry spell going scoreless for the next two minutes. In that stretch though the Vulcans only added two points to their lead. Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) hit two free throws and Oxenrider followed with two more making it a five point game with 2:21 to go, 73-68.

The Huskies, however, missed on four shots and turned the ball over once, missing a chance to cut to cut into the Cal lead. Bloomsburg did close to within four points, 75-71 with seven seconds to go, but the Vulcans hit two free throws in the closing seconds to seal the victory.
Gallagher led the Huskies, now 22-6, with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Oxenrider finished with 18 points. California, 22-6, got 17 points from Amy johns and 16 from Stephanie Michael.

In the opening game Edinboro used a balanced scoring attack, with five players in double figures, to beat Millersville, 70-58. The Fighting Scots led by just two at the break, but an 13-2 run midway through the second half pushed the lead from three to 14 and break the game open. Kiara Brown paced Edinboro, now 25-3, with 15 points. Millersville, 22-6, got 23 points from Mashira Newman.
