BLOOMSBURG—
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) scored 18 points and led five players in double figures as the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team posted a 77-50 win over Cheyney University in the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Eastern Division opener for both teams.
Bloomsburg jumped out to an early 10-6 lead in the first four minutes of play with Wieller scoring four points and
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty) nailing a three-pointer. Cheyney though battled back went on an 8-0 run helped along by two, three-pointers.
Wieller though answered with a three-pointer putting the Huskies back on top for good, 15-14. The bucket was the start of a 12-0 run for the Huskies that gave the Huskies a 22-14 edge with 10:40 to play in the half.
Later Bloomsburg made it a 16-point led when Wieller converted a three-point play making it a 32-16 lead with 6:44 to go. The Wolves came back with a rally that narrowed the Huskies to nine with a minute left before the break. But, Bloomsburg's
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) was fouled on a three-pointer at the buzzer and hit all three shots giving the Huskies a 42-30 lead at the half.
In the second half the Huskies outscored the Wolves 17-0 over the first nine minutes of the half to put the game out of reach.
Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area) opened the period with a jumper, then Bloomsburg went on a three-point barrage. Flanagan, Oxenrider, Noack, Wieller and
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) all drained three-pointers in the run giving the Huskies a 59-30 lead.
From there the closest Cheyney would get is 23 points as the Huskies kept the pressure on forcing 18 second half turnovers and holding the Wolves to just 20 second half points.
Along with Wieller's 18 points, Oxenrider added 15, while Noack and Simmons scored 11 each with Flanagan notching 10 points. Cheyney, 0-13, 0-9 PSAC East, got 11 points from Nadirah Brown.
Bloomsburg, now 13-3, 7-3 in the PSAC East, will host Mansfield on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
