Huskies Look to Run into Record Book Against Slippery Rock

BLOOMSBURG – It has been a record-breaking season for the Bloomsburg University football team and junior running back Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West).  Along with putting their playoff lives on the line this weekend at Slippery Rock, the Huskies and Quiteh have the chance to break more records and possibly become the greatest rushing team in conference history.

The 12th-ranked Huskies (9-1 overall, 6-1 PSAC East) hit the road for their regular season finale on Saturday, Nov. 10 to face The Rock of Slippery Rock (6-4, 5-2 PSAC West) at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.

Quiteh enters Saturday's game ranked third on the BU all-time rushing list with 4,946 yards.  He is 54 yards from being the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)'s fourth 5,000-yard rusher and 159 away from tying Irv Sigler's mark set in 1997 for second in BU history.

He entered the season ranked fifth, moved into fourth after a 218-yard performance in the season-opening victory over Stonehill, and moved into third with a 152-yard game against Kutztown.

Quiteh leads Division II in rushing at 173.9 yards per game.  Across all Division's, Quiteh ranks second in rushing.

As a team, Bloomsburg needs 184 rushing yards to set the BU single-season record of 3,460 previously set in 2008. It needs 276 yards to set the PSAC single-season record of 3,552 set by Millersville in 1981.

In last week's 24-23 victory over West Chester, the Huskies ran the ball 52 times, including all 25 first-down plays, for 256 yards.  It was the first time this season Bloomsburg ran the ball on every first-down of the game.

Saturday marks the 13th meeting between the Huskies and The Rock.  The Huskies' all-time record versus Slippery Rock is 9-3. Since beginning the series in 1934 and a record of 1-3, Bloomsburg has won eight consecutive meetings, not losing since a 1983 game at Slippery Rock.

In the teams' last meeting in 2005, BU used a career-high 250 rushing yards and four touchdowns from Jamar Brittingham to defeat Slippery Rock 40-24 at Redman Stadium.  Current BU assistant coach Jack Lydic was the quarterback for the Huskies in 2005.

Bloomsburg head coach Danny Hale is looking to win his 213th career game this week, moving him into sole possession of second in PSAC history passing Millersville's Dr. Gene Carpenter.  Denny Douds is the PSAC leader at 237.

The Huskies will need a win against The Rock Saturday to secure a place in the NCAA playoffs and a chance to host a first round playoff game on Nov. 17.  Bloomsburg enters the game ranked fourth in Super Region One with the top six teams in the region making the postseason.  The selection show for the NCAA playoffs will be web-streamed on NCAA.com on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 5 p.m.

Under center this season for the Huskies has been redshirt freshman Tim Kelly (Camp Hill/Cedar Cliff).  Kelly has been superb in his first season in the maroon and gold.  He's tossed 20 touchdowns, including a four-touchdown game against ESU, for 1,585 yards with just eight interceptions.

Kelly's offensive line has achieved everything that has been asked of the bunch this season.  Not only has it pushed Bloomsburg to third in Division II in rushing at 327.6 yards per game, it has allowed just one sack in the last five games.  On the season, BU's seven allowed sacks rank second in the PSAC and 10th in Division II.

Senior wide receiver Ryan Dickerson (Harleysville/Souderton) has caught a touchdown pass in six straight games, the most by a BU player dating back to 2000.  In 2000, Mike Lelko caught a TD pass in BU's final six games.  Dickerson's 28 yards last week snapped a three-game stretch of bringing in at least 100 receiving yards.

Defensively, sophomore linebacker Justin Shirk (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) tallied a career-high 14 tackles including eight solo stops and two for a loss last week against West Chester, earning him the PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week. On special teams, Shirk has a team-leading 14 tackles.

Senior linebacker Jarrett Pidgeon (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) leads BU with 85 tackles, which rates sixth in the PSAC.  He has led BU in tackles six times this season.  Senior defensive back Terrell Oglesby (Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic) has three interceptions in 2012 and is tied for seventh in the PSAC.

Senior defensive lineman Larry Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton)'s 10.5 sacks in 2012 are not only tied for second in the PSAC, but are third in BU history for sacks in a season.

With their 35-7 win last Saturday over Lock Haven, The Rock assured themselves of a winning record for the fourth consecutive season, the sixth season in the last seven, and the 18th time in head coach George Mihalik's 25 seasons as the Green and White's head coach.

Quarterback Nigel Barksdale has been one of the main focal points in the Slippery Rock offense.  Not only has he thrown for 1,415 yards and 14 touchdowns, Barksdale is The Rock's second-leading rusher with 507 yards on a team-high 134 rushes.

Senior running back Akeem Satterfield enters the game ranked eighth in SRU history with 2,856 rushing yards.  He's run for 642 this season along with four touchdowns.

With a win Saturday, the Huskies could assure their ninth trip to the playoffs in school history and first since 2010.
