MANSFIELD—
Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) scored the game's final four points lifting the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team to a 62-59 come-from-behind win over Mansfield University on Wednesday night in PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) action.
Earlier in the day the Huskies (21-4, 15-4 PSAC East) earned a fifth place ranking in the first NCAA Division II Atlantic Region poll of the season. The top eight teams in the regional rankings get a spot in the NCAA playoffs at the end of the conference playoffs.
The Huskies held a brief early lead, 4-2, in the game on a jumper by
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty). From there the Mountaineers (9-14, 6-13 PSAC East) outscored Bloomsburg 17-1 over the next seven minutes to lead 19-5 at the 12-minute mark.
Mansfield maintained a double digit lead for much of the remainder of the first half except briefly when a three-pointer by Wieller pulled the Huskies to within eight points, 25-17, with 7:35 to go before halftime.
Trailing by 11 points at halftime Bloomsburg saw Mansfield stretch the lead to 14 on two occasions, the last coming with 12:42 to play when the Mountaineers led 47-33.
The Huskies though began their comeback with a layup from
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) which was the start of 12-0 run for Bloomsburg. Wieller followed with a three-pointer with
Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area) hitting two free throws making it 47-40 with 10:30 to play.
Wieller drained her second three-pointer in the rally to make it a four point game before Gallagher hit two free throws pulling the Huskies to within two points at 47-45 with 9:38 to play.
Mansfield pushed the lead back to five points before consecutive baskets from Gallagher and Flanagan made it a one-point game, 52-51, with 4:42 to go. The Mountaineers pushed the lead back to four points when Monique Webley scored and hit a free throw with 4:30 to play.
Gallagher then followed with a three-pointer making it a one-point game before
Brianna Dudeck (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) hit a layup off a steal from Wieller giving Bloomsburg the lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the game at 56-55.
Mallory Moore put Mansfield back on top with a jumper before
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) answered for the Huskies with a basket as the Huskies regained the edge 58-57 with 3:05 to play.
Mansfield came back to retake the lead on a Marrysa Moyer bucket with 2:22 to play. It would be Mansfield's last lead and score of the game setting the stage for Gallagher's heroics.
The senior scored a layup with the shot clock winding down to give the Huskies a one-point lead and then hit a jumper with 1:03 making it a three-point lead for the Huskies. Mansfield could not get off a game-tying shot giving Bloomsburg the victory.
Wieller led the Huskies with 17 points, while Gallagher added 13 points. Mansfield was led by 20 points from Mallory Moore.
The Huskies play at Kutztown on Saturday at 1 p.m.
