BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University women's basketball put an exclamation point on the 2011-12 regular season with a 73-60 win over Millersville University on Saturday afternoon. The win was the 10th straight for the Huskies who won the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Eastern Division title earlier in the week and will host a PSAC Quarterfinal playoff game on Tuesday.
Before the game the Huskies honored
Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South), the lone senior member of the team.
Bloomsburg used the emotion of its pre-game ceremony honoring Gallagher to sprint out to a 17-0 lead.
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) was red-hot to start for Bloomsburg scoring eight of the team's first 10 points and overall 12 of the first 17 points. Gallagher also hit a three-pointer and
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) a couple of free throws as the Huskies blanketed Millersville defensively. It was not until 14:12 was left in the half did the Marauders, the third seed from the PSAC East in next week's playoffs, score their first basket.
Bloomsburg continued to build upon its big lead and led by 30, 43-13, when
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) drained a three-pointer with 4:28 to play before half. Millersville though went on an 11-3 run to close out the half and cut the deficit to 22 at the break. In the opening 20 minutes the Huskies shot nearly 60 percent from the floor (16-27) and forced Millersville into just 24 percent shooting (8-33) and 14 turnovers.
In the second half the lead for the Huskies held before 17 and 24 points for the first 12 minutes of play. With the Huskies up 65-43 with 7:27 to play, Millersville began a slow comeback using a 17-3 rally that cut the deficit to eight points, 68-60, with 1:20 to go in the game.
The Huskies though responded hitting five of six free throws down the stretch to hold on for the 13-point win.
Ellis finished with 19 points and six rebounds for Bloomsburg with Gallagher getting 17 and nine rebounds. Wieller was the third BU player in double figures with 15 points.
Sophia Waters scored 16 points for Millersville, 16-10, 13-8 PSAC East, with Aurielle Mosley and Mashira Newman scoring 10 each.
Bloomsburg improved to 24-4 and finished PSAC East play with a record of 18-4. The Huskies will host Shippensburg on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Ticket prices for the games will be $7 for adults, $2 for students and seniors with students from PSAC schools admitted free with ID.
