MILLERSVILLE—
Brooke Simonovich (East Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) scored 7:15 into overtime to lift the third-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team to a 1-0 win over sixth-ranked Millersville on Wednesday.
The Marauders had the early edge in field position getting two penalty corners and two shots off in the opening six minutes, but Bloomsburg goalie
Megan Eppley (Camp Hill/Camp Hill) came up with saves on both attempts.
The Huskies turned field position around and were awarded three corners and got off four shots in the next two minutes, but could not find the back of the cage.
After a scoreless first half, the teams went back and forth, but Eppley and Millersville goalie Lauren Sotzin each had two second half saves. In the final 21 seconds of regulation Millersville had one final chance to score getting a penalty corner. However the Huskies defense broke up the play forcing the extra session.
In overtime the Huskies held the advantage in field position getting off five shots in the first few minutes of play, but several of the shots were blocked and one was saved by Sotzin.
Bloomsburg finally hit the back of the cage when Simonovich connected on the third of three straight shots by the Huskies on a scramble in front of the goal giving the Huskies the win. The goal was the fifth of the year for Simonovich.
In goal Eppley finished with 10 saves for Bloomsburg.
Bloomsburg goes to 7-1, 1-1 in the PSAC East, while Millersville falls to 5-3, 1-1 in the PSAC East.
The Huskies will host East Stroudsburg on Saturday at 1 p.m.
