Simonovich and Mathews Score in 4-2 Setback to Mansfield

Brittany Mathews scored her fifth goal of the season.
Box Score MANSFIELD – Senior Brooke Simonovich (East Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) and Brittany Mathews (Reedsville/Indian Valley) each scored in the second half for the Bloomsburg University field hockey team, but Mansfield's four game-opening goals lifted the Mountaineers to a 4-2 win over the Huskies Saturday afternoon at Spaulding Field.

Bloomsburg (9-3 overall) outshot Mansfield (4-7) 22-11, marking the second straight game BU outshot its opponent despite dropping the final decision.  Bloomsburg has outshot its opponent in 12 consecutive periods (including overtime) as it held 10-8 and 12-3 advantages on Saturday.

After Mansfield scored the first four goals of the game, Simonovich put the Huskies on the board with a goal in the 42nd minute from the top of the circle.  She has now scored in a career-high five consecutive games for the Huskies and is second on the team in scoring with 11.

Mathews responded with a goal just over three minutes later to bring the Bloomsburg deficit to two at 4-2.  Her goal came from a rebound off the MU goalkeeper's pad for her fifth goal of the year and second in the last four games.

The Mountaineers scored both of their first-half goals less than three minutes apart.  Taryn Schawillie scored at the 25:22 mark from 10 yards out off a cross from Brianna Velepec.  Velepec also assisted on Kristyn Grunza's score in the 28th minute off one of four penalty corners on the afternoon for Mansfield.

Schawillie tallied her second multi-goal game and team-leading ninth goal of the season just three seconds into the second half off a cross from Grunza from the right side.

Along with holding the shooting advantage, the Huskies also had 14 penalty corners to the Mounties' four.

Megan Eppley (Camp Hill/Camp Hill) and Emiley Maiorana (Greencastle/Greencastle-Antrim) each saw playing time in net for Bloomsburg.  Eppley play the first 41:05 and made three saves, and was relieved by Maiorana who didn't allow a goal while making a pair of saves in the cage.

Bloomsburg returns home and into Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action on Wednesday, Oct. 3 against LIU Post.  Game time at Sports Stadium is set for 4 p.m.
