BLOOMSBURG – With all eyes on the skies waiting for severe storms to hit the area, the 19th-ranked Bloomsburg University football team outlasted the impending weather and Edinboro University, 30-14, Saturday afternoon in the first game at the newly-dedicated Danny  Hale Field at Redman Stadium.
 
The Huskies (2-0) put up their second 300-yard rushing performance in as many games this season.  The Fighting Scots (0-1) could not seem to find the answer as Bloomsburg continued to use different options in the offensive attack that got it out to an early lead, a lead it could rely on its defense to protect.

With the win, Bloomsburg head coach Danny Hale moves into 13th on the all-time Division II coaching victories list with 205.
 
Junior Eddie Mateo (Bethlehem/Freedom) rushed for a game-high 148 yards on 21 carries to pace the Huskies.  Mateo ran well both in-between and outside the tackles and often punished defenders who stood in his way.  His one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter marked his team-best third rushing touchdown of the season.
 
Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West) got off to a great start in the opening quarter.  The junior gained 63 of his 134 yards in the first 15 minutes.  Not only did Quiteh lead his team out of the tunnel before the game in Bloomsburg's home-opener, he gave the Huskies their first points of the day on an 11-yard touchdown run just under three minutes into play.
 
Quiteh's 134-yard performance inches him closer to moving into third-place on the Bloomsburg all-time rushing list.  He has 3,559 yards in his career and is just 27 yards shy of third place.   
 
Saturday was the sixth time that Mateo and Quiteh each rushed for 100 yards in the same game.  As a team, Bloomsburg outrushed Edinboro, 319-104.  It was the most rushing yards Edinboro had allowed since 2002.
 
The right foot of junior kicker Dan Fisher played a significant factor in the Bloomsburg victory.  Not only was Fisher a perfect 3-for-3 in his field goal attempts, he notched another school-record on his belt.
 
Fisher 'warmed up' with a 22-yard kick to give Bloomsburg a 10-0 lead through the first quarter.  He entered the game with a career-long of 43 yards, but outdid that feat on two occasions.  Fisher knocked home a 45-yarder in the early minutes of the second quarter, and followed that up with a school-record 52-yarder two drives later.  It broke a previous record of 50 yards set twice, with the last coming in 2009 by Joe Koenig.
 
The trio of field goals gave the Huskies a 16-0 advantage heading into halftime thanks to the dominating first-half performance of the BU defense.  Bloomsburg didn't allow an Edinboro first down until less than six minutes remaining in the second quarter.   It also stopped Edinboro on two crucial third downs that forced the Fighting Scots to punt on fourth-and-one.  The furthest Edinboro drove into Bloomsburg territory in the first half was the 26-yardline.
 
Bloomsburg senior linebacker Jarrett Pidgeon (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) tallied a season-high ten tackles in the victory.  His defensive core limited Edinboro to less than 100 total yards in the first half. 
 
Fellow linebackers Ryan Feldman (Mechanicsburg/JP McCaskey) and Justin Shirk (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) hunted down the Fighting Scot rushers time-after-time.  Feldman was second on the team with eight tackles, while Shirk picked up six.
 
DJ Robinson (Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser) and Gary Postell (Philadelphia/Bishop McDevitt) were active in the secondary for the Huskies.  Robinson had seven tackles for the second straight game.  Postell, a redshirt freshman, has worked his way into a strong rotating group of corners after having four tackles and a pair of pass deflections Saturday.
 
The teams traded touchdowns in the final two quarters.  After Tony David (Allentown/Salisbury) and Chris Kennedy (Phoenixville/Archbishop Carroll) teamed up to stop the Fighting Scots on fourth-and-one on its first possession of the second half, Edinboro responded on its next possession to score its first touchdown of the game on a 4-yard run from Willie Lowe.
 
With the game getting closer, Bloomsburg quarterback Tim Kelly (Camp Hill/Cedar Cliff) helped match the Edinboro score with one of his own.  He tossed a 25-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Kyle Fisher (Denver/Cocalico) the following possession to put Bloomsburg up, 23-7. 
 
In his second career game, Kelly was able to control the offense and most importantly, not turn the ball over.  He threw for 97 yards on 7-for-17 passing and has not thrown an interception through Bloomsburg's two games.
 
Kyle Fisher (Denver/Cocalico) was one of four Huskies to bring down catches.  He led the team with three for 46 yards.
 
Mateo ran his way to pay dirt in the fourth quarter on a one-yard rush on third down.  The Bloomsburg lead grew to as many as 23 with the Mateo score.  Edinboro closed out the scoring with a 92-yard drive in the final three minutes.
 
Kenny Pettis seemed to be everywhere for the Fighting Scots.  He brought down a game-high 19 tackles and was one of two players in double-digits for Edinboro.  Veuntraw Robinson chimed in with ten tackles on the afternoon.
 
Edinboro quarterback Cody Harris threw for 209 yards on 23-for-35 passing.  He tossed a touchdown pass to Devin Ghafoor, who was one of two Fighting Scots to bring in over 40 yards receiving.  Marcus Johnson had a game-high 48 yards.
 
Bloomsburg looks ahead to one of its most-talked about matchups since pre-season camp.  The Huskies host 11th-ranked Kutztown on Saturday, Sept. 15 for Parents Day in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener at Danny  Hale Field at Redman Stadium.  Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
