Women's Basketball Team Closes Home Stand with Win

BLOOMSBURG -- Led by 19 points from Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) the 25th-ranked Bloomsburg University women's basketball team defeated Shippensburg University, 70-40 Wednesday evening at the Nelson Field House in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup.
 
The Huskies, the defending PSAC East champions, went back and forth with the Raiders in the early going before a jumper from Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) gave the Huskies the lead for good at 6-4 with 15:33 left in the half. Then with the Huskies holding a 15-11 edge with 10 minutes to play in the half, Bloomsburg put together a 12-4 run, including holding Shippensburg scoreless for over six minutes, to lead 27-15 at halftime.

As a team the Huskies held the Raiders to just 25 percent shooting from the floor (7-27) and forced 13 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play.
 
Ellis came out of the break and scored the first nine points for the Huskies pushing the lead to 36-18, while also adding a block and a steal in the opening five and a half minutes of the second half. Overall the Huskies used a 19-3 run in the first eight minutes of action, including a four minutes scoreless stretch for the Raiders, to put the game out of reach.
 
Bloomsburg continued to add to its lead growing it to as many as 33 points on a layup from Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) with 2:04 left gave the Huskies their biggest lead of the game at 68-35 before settling for the 30-point victory.
 
The 40 points allowed by the Huskies was the best defensive effort of the season for the team, while Shippensburg was held without a player in double figures for the first time since the 2004-05 season. The margin was victory was also the most for the Huskies over Shippensburg since a 16-point win back in the 2002-03 season.
 
Ellis led the way for the Huskies, now 11-3, 7-3 PSAC East, finishing with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Wieller and Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) each added nine points. Brianna Dudeck (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) grabbed a career-high eight boards coming off the bench, while also adding four points. In all 11 of the 16 players in the game for Bloomsburg scored.
 
For the Raiders, now 9-6, 5-5 in the PSAC East, Stephanie Knauer led the team with eight points and pulled down 14 rebounds with Shawna Wert also chipping in with eight points.
 
Bloomsburg will take its four-game winning streak on the road Saturday when it visits Cheyney at 1 p.m.
