BLOOMSBURG – The ninth-ranked Huskies celebrated Homecoming Weekend with a dominating performance on Saturday, putting together a convincing 45-7 victory over visiting Millersville inside Danny Hale Field at Robert B. Redman Stadium in front of 5,395 fans.
The Huskies (6-0, 3-0 PSAC East) put together an all-around performance on Saturday afternoon, setting the tempo with offense early while also scoring touchdowns on defense and special teams. Bloomsburg forced Millersville (0-6, 0-3 PSAC East) into three turnovers on the day in another dominating defensive showing, limiting the Marauders to 232 total yards of offense.
Bloomsburg seized control from the early going, taking great field position when
Lawrence Elliott Jr. (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) returned the opening kickoff 69 yards to the Millersville 27-yard line. From there, the Huskies needed only four
Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West) runs to put up a 7-0 lead on a 2-yard touchdown scamper by the PSAC's all-time leading rusher.
The score remained 7-0 through the rest of the first quarter, but the Huskies broke the game open with 24 points in the second period. Bloomsburg drove 93 yards in 10 plays in its first possession of the quarter, capped by a 31-yard pass from
Tim Kelly (Camp Hill/Cedar Cliff) to
Tony Peregrin (Mayfield/Lakeland) for the game's second score.
Following a Husky defensive stop and a 19-yard Marauders punt, Bloomsburg took over at the Millersville 40-yard line. Just three plays later, Quiteh was into the end zone again on a five-yard run for the 21-0 advantage.
The next Millersville drive ended when
Gary Postell (Philadelphia/Bishop McDevitt) forced running back Ian Sadon to fumble, with Postell taking the ball back to the Millersville 30. The ensuing drive led to a 31-yard field goal from
Danny Fisher (Liverpool/Central Dauphin) to stretch the BU lead to 24.
Bloomsburg squeezed in another score just before the halftime buzzer. A nine-play, 53-yard drive culminated in another Kelly touchdown pass as this time the redshirt sophomore signal caller connected with senior receiver
Glenn Hutton Jr. (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI) on a five-yard strike with three seconds left to take a 31-0 lead into halftime.
The defense and special teams stole the show in the second half. The second half started with a big play defensively early in the third. Senior safety
Jonathan Patrick (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) picked off a pass from Millersville quarterback Curtis Frye and raced 34 yards for a touchdown and a 38-0 lead.
Another big play led to the Huskies' final touchdown. After nearly taking the opening kickoff all the way for a touchdown, Elliott would not be denied on a third quarter punt return. The true freshman broke through the Marauder punt coverage, racing 73 yards to pay dirt for his first career touchdown in maroon and gold.
Millersville worked its way on the board in the fourth quarter on an 8-yard touchdown throw to Kevin Porter from Connor Casey.
Joe Parsnik (Wilkes-Barre/Coughlin) carried a career-high 18 times for 79 yards to pace the Huskies on the ground. Quiteh finished with 63 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. Kelly completed seven of 13 pass attempts for 84 yards and two scores while Hutton led the receiving corps with three catches for 31 yards and Peregrin caught two balls for 35 yards.
Dylan Spangler (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) made eight stops to lead the Husky defense while
Justin Shirk (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) was in on seven tackles. The Bloomsburg defense racked up five sacks –
Ezra Ranco (Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) and
Roy Dennis (Berwick/Berwick) each had a career-high 1.5 sacks apiece while
Shawn Mitchell (Nazareth/Nazareth) also tallied sack.
Larry Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton) and Joseph Wetty also combined for a sack while Webster recovered a Millersville fumble in the first quarter as well. Mitchell,
DJ Robinson (Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser) and
Brandon True (Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt) all made six tackles with Spangler, Mitchell and True all setting career highs in stops.
Millersville quarterback Curtis Frye completed 16 of 24 passes for 93 yards with Porter hauling in five passes for 79 yards. Sadon led the way on the ground with 60 yards rushing.
Bloomsburg travels to East Stroudsburg for another PSAC East battle next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
