BLOOMSBURG – For the second time in a week, the Bloomsburg University field hockey team earned a bit of revenge for an early season loss, this time by knocking off visiting Slippery Rock, 3-1, at Sports Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The victory gave the Huskies (8-4, 4-1 PSAC) their fourth straight triumph and avenged a 3-2 loss at Slippery Rock (6-8, 2-4 PSAC) on Sept. 18. On Oct. 9, Bloomsburg dropped No. 7 East Stroudsburg to even that season series as well.
Bloomsburg wasted little time in starting the scoring on Tuesday. Huskies' leading scorer
Felicia Domenici (Kunkletown/Pleasant Valley) set up the opening score, finding
Nikki Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) on the left corner. Black drove her shot past The Rock keeper for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 lead with just 1:49 elapsed from the game clock.
The Huskies grabbed a 2-0 advantage before the game was 10 minutes old when Domenici added to her goals total, notching her 13th score of the season at 9:56 when she grabbed her own rebound and found the back of the cage with a shot from the right corner.
After taking a two-goal lead to halftime and through much of the second period, the Huskies added a bit of insurance at 66:30 when
Brittany Mathews (Reedsville/Indian Valley) delivered a goal on a shot from the top of the circle, her eighth tally of the year.
Bloomsburg maintained its lead with strong defense for much of the second half, limiting The Rock to two shot attempts over the final 35 minutes. Â The visitors finally broke through on a rocket from Allison Shade at 68:30, but by then the Huskies had already sealed victory.
Megan Eppley (Camp Hill/Camp Hill) earned the victory with three saves for Bloomsburg.
The hosts held a 15-7 edge in shots for the game and also earned 11 penalty corners to The Rock's seven.
Carlee Dumars made 10 saves for The Rock.
The Huskies close out a four-game home stand by welcoming West Chester to Sports Stadium at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday evening as part of Alumni Welcome Back Day. The pre-game alumni reception begins at 4:30 p.m.
