BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team fell to Millersville University, 64-62, Wednesday night in a PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Eastern Division game on Wednesday night at the Nelson Field House.
After Millersville opened the game with a bucket, the Huskies outscored the Marauders 16-3 over the next 10 minutes of play to lead 16-5 with 9:10 to go in the half.
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) scored six points and
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) four as Bloomsburg raced out to the big lead.
The Huskies stretched that lead to 24-11 with 5:45 to go on a pair of free throws from
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) and went tot the locker room leading 37-20 after Ellis scored with 30 seconds to go before the break. In the opening half the Huskies defense held the Marauders to just 33 percent shooting from the floor (9-27) and forced 19 turnovers, which they converted into 15 points, while shooting 50 percent from the floor themselves (13-26).
In the opening minutes of the second half the Huskies took their biggest lead of the game at 19 points on a three-pointer by
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) giving Bloomsburg a 42-23 lead.
Over the next six minutes though, the Huskies were held scoreless as the Marauders put together a 20-0 run putting them on top 43-42 with 12 minutes left in the game and their first lead since the opening minutes of the game.
The Huskies came back and quickly regained the lead with
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty) hitting a pair of free throws followed by buckets from
Brianna Dudeck (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) and Oxenrider making it 48-43 in favor of Bloomsburg with 9:49 to go.
Later Mashira Newman's three-pointer with 5:55 to play tied the game at 55-55, the third tie of the half. The Huskies answered back and led by four points, 61-57, with 1:19 to go after Ellis and Dudeck scored inside.
Millersville's Senada Mehmedovic though hit a three-pointer and a pair of free throws in a 30-second span to put the Marauders up one, 62-61, with 36 seconds left. After working the clock down Wieller was called for a charge giving Millersville the ball. Newman was quickly fouled and hit both free throws to make it a 64-61 game with 10 seconds to play.
With the Huskies needing a three to tie, Bloomsburg's
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) was fouled while going for the game-tying shot with one-second left. However, Ford was ruled inside the three-point line, giving her two shots instead of three. Ford made the first, but looking to intentionally miss the next, her shot was rebounded by Millersville giving the Marauders the win.
Oxenrider led the way for the Huskies (15-5, 11-5 PSAC) scoring 13 points. Ellis and Wieller each scored 10 points, while grabbing and four boards respectively with
Danielle Derr (Dresner/Upper Dublin) adding eight points.
For the Marauders (14-6, 11-5 PSAC), Newman had 14 points and 11 rebounds with Celeste Robinson and Mehmedovic each adding 12. Aurielle Mosley contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Huskies will host Cheyney University on 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
