BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team beat Cheyney University, 94-55, Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action at the Nelson Fieldhouse.
The game was tied at 2-2 just over a minute into the game, when the Huskies went on a 10-0 run over three and a half minutes to give them a 12-2 advantage. Four players scored in the run led by four points from
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor).
Strong defense by the Huskies held Cheyney in single digits until Nicole Tyndle hit a jumper bringing the score to 21-10 with 11 minutes left in the half. Meanwhile Bloomsburg's offense continued to build the lead with the Huskies opening up a 47-15 margin with 1:11 to go before halftime. Offensively the Huskies shot 50 percent from the floor in the opening half (18-36), while limiting the Wolves to 18 percent shooting (5-28) and forcing 19 turnovers.
The Huskies, leading 47-20 at the break, put the game out reach in the first two minutes of the second with a 10-0 run.
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) scored eight of the 10 points, including hitting two three-pointers which gave Bloomsburg a 57-20 lead with 17:55 to play.
Bloomsburg substituted liberally throughout the second half and stretched the margin to as many as 46 points, 87-41, on a three-pointer from
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) with 6:11 to play.
The Huskies were in scoring by Wieller with 18 points, while Ellis and Simmons each added 12 points. In all Bloomsburg had 16 players see game action with 13 players scoring at least two points.
Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area) had eight assists in the game and moved into second place for most assists in school history with 457 moving past Erin Beggs (1995-99) on the all-time list.
For the Wolves, now 1-19, 1-16 PSAC, Kyra Hines-Allen lead the way with 18 points and six rebounds, while Nicole Tyndle gave 12 points and eight boards.
The Huskies, 16-5, 12-5 PSAC, will play at Shippensburg University Wednesday starting at 6:00 p.m.
