BLOOMSBURG – The 18th-ranked Bloomsburg University football team rushed for 457 yards en route to a convincing 41-13 triumph over Stonehill in its season opener on Saturday afternoon inside Danny Hale Field at Robert B. Redman Stadium. The win marks the Huskies' 14th straight victorious home opener.

A pair of Huskies surpassed the 100-yard rushing plateau as senior Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West) ran for 182 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries while sophomore Dai'Shon Munger (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross) added a strong backfield compliment with a career-high 135 yards on 21 attempts of his own. Redshirt freshman Joe Parsnik (Wilkes-Barre/Coughlin) made his Husky debut with 81 yards on 12 attempts. In all, Bloomsburg ran the ball 68 times.

The victory marked the first for interim head coach Paul Darragh, who takes over for the retired Danny Hale.

Tim Kelly
The Huskies dominated nearly every statistical category. The biggest difference came on the ground with Bloomsburg holding a 457-53 advantage. In total yards, Bloomsburg led 642-198.

Quiteh put the Huskies in position for their first points of the year on their second drive with a 44-yard scamper down to the Stonehill eight-yard line. A holding penalty stifled the drive, but senior Danny Fisher (Liverpool/Central Dauphin) connected on a 25-yard field goal to put the hosts on the board.

Stonehill was driving in Bloomsburg territory on its next possession, looking to tie or take the lead when the Huskies hit for a big momentum swing. Skyhawks quarterback Logan Meyer looked to complete a pass inside the red zone, but Husky newcomer Tomas Cabrera (Hanover/Hanover Area) made a diving interception at his own 16-yard line to end the threat.

Bloomsburg found pay dirt for the first time late on its ensuing possession, driving 84 yards on just four plays. Quarterback Tim Kelly (Camp Hill/Cedar Cliff) put an exclamation mark on the quick drive by connecting with Glenn Hutton Jr. (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI) on a 56-yard touchdown strike and a swift 10-0 edge. Bloomsburg would stretch its advantage to 17 on a five-play, 55-yard drive to begin the second quarter. Quiteh did nearly all of the damage, rushing for 39 yards on the drive including a 27-yard touchdown sprint and a 17-0 lead.

In the first half alone, Bloomsburg posted 361 yards to Stonehill's 68.

The Huskies kept the pressure on in the second half. Bloomsburg went 66 yards in 11 plays on its opening drive out of the locker room and punched in another touchdown when Quiteh scored from six yards out.

Stonehill (0-1) cracked into the scoring column less than two minutes later when Gordon McLeod took a 35-yard pass from quarterback Logan Meyer. The extra point attempt failed, leaving the Huskies ahead 24-6.

On their next possession, the Huskies effectively put the game on ice. Bloomsburg again produced another long drive, going 70 yards in eight plays. The Huskies never put the ball in the air on the drive as Munger carried the ball four times for 37 yards and Quiteh rushed on three occasions for 30 yards along with a three-yard rush from Brody Myers (Akron/Ephrata). Quiteh finished off the drive with an 8-yard run to extend the lead to a commanding 31-6.

Bloomsburg stretched the lead to as much as 35 points in the fourth quarter. Fisher drilled a 47-yard field goal attempt early in the fourth before Matt Wenrich (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) found the end zone for his second career touchdown on a five-yard rumble to make the score 41-6.

Stonehill completed the scoring on a three-yard touchdown pass from Meyer to Billy Pierce with 4:43 to play and the game already out of reach.

For Quiteh, the game marked the 18th straight contest in which the senior has surpassed 100 yards on the ground. The 182-yard effort on Saturday moves him ever closer to the Bloomsburg and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference career rushing record of 5,689 held by Jamar Brittingham. Quiteh now stands at 5,510 career yards and needs 180 to set a new mark.

Kelly finished the day by completing 10 of 17 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown. His favorite target was Hutton, who recorded five receptions for 124 yards. The senior tied his personal career record for receptions in a game and surpassed his previous best of 120 yards set against Millersville last season.

Junior Tony Peregrin (Mayfield/Lakeland) hauled in his first four receptions in maroon and gold while freshman Lawrence Elliott Jr. (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) also made his Huskies debut with a 16-yard grab.

Defensively, the Huskies never allowed the visitors to establish any momentum. Redshirt freshman Andrew Harris (Bethlehem/Whitehall) made an impact in his first game, leading Bloomsburg in tackles with eight including a pass deflection and a tackle for a loss. Justin Shirk (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) made six stops while Dylan Spangler (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) was in on five tackles. Larry Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton) had the day's only sack for either team. DJ Robinson (Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser) also added an interception.

Meyer ended the day by going 12-for-34 and 145 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Stonehill. Nate Robitaille led the Skyhawks in receptions with four for 44 yards. Brian Harrington made 17 tackles while Anthony Masucci was in on 13 stops.

Bloomsburg hits the road next week for a PSAC crossover contest with West Division foe Edinboro. That game is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Sox Harrison Stadium.
