Post-Game Interviews/HighlightsBLOOMSBURG – It was a happy Homecoming Saturday for the Bloomsburg University football team and the 5,237 fans in attendance under partly sunny skies at Redman Stadium as the 12th-ranked Huskies romped to a 41-0 victory over Millersville to move to 6-0 overall on the year and 5-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play.
The Huskies dominated the Marauders (0-6, 0-5) in every statistical category, finishing with a 446-175 edge in total yardage. Bloomsburg racked up 258 yards on the ground and 188 through the air, but the defense was again the star.
Bloomsburg scored its first shutout win since a 21-0 victory at Shippensburg on Oct. 25, 2008 by limiting Millersville to just nine first downs while forcing five turnovers – four interceptions and one fumble recovery.
Junior defensive back
Donovan Morris (Philadelphia/George Washington) set up the Huskies' first score, picking off Marauders quarterback Matt Misley at the Millersville 20 yard line midway through the first quarter.
Tim Kelly (Camp Hill/Cedar Cliff) passed to
Trent Daniels (Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township) for a 16-yard gain and
Eddie Mateo (Bethlehem/Freedom) put the hosts on the board with his 30th career touchdown run from one yard out.Â
Another Huskies interception, this time by senior
DJ Robinson (Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser), put Bloomsburg at the Millersville 32 less than two minutes into the second quarter. Senior defensive end
Matt Heilig (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) created the turnover, getting a hand on the pass at the line and Robinson did the rest with a diving catch from the secondary. On the next play from scrimmage, Mateo burst through the line for a scintillating 32-yard touchdown run and a 13-0 lead.
Two more Huskies touchdowns before halftime put the game out of reach. Another long strike from Kelly to Daniels put the Huskies in the red zone and Mateo tallied his third rushing score of the half from six yards out for a 20-0 advantage.
Morris intercepted another Misley pass attempt near midfield and followed with a 16-yard return to allow the Huskies to set up shop at the Millersville 32. Bloomsburg found the end zone once more for a 27-0 lead at intermission as Kelly passed to
Aaron Allison (Philadelphia/Frankford) and the sophomore tight end ran through Millersville defenders for a 14-yard touchdown 20 seconds before the half.
Bloomsburg put an exclamation mark on the first half dominance with its fourth interception of the period – this time from
Garrett Pope (Northumberland/Shikellamy). Millersville finished the first half with just 49 total yards and four turnovers.
The Huskies had more fireworks as the second half began. Kelly dropped back to pass on a third-and-eight and could not find an open receiver. Instead, the junior quarterback took off and found daylight down the far sideline, sprinting for a career-best 81-yard touchdown and a 34-0 lead.
Newcomer
Altarique Mosley-Dew (East Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) ran for his second touchdown in as many weeks with a career-long run – a 30-yard burst early in the fourth quarter for the final score of the game. The defense generated a fifth turnover – a fumble forced and recovered by
Eric Schwartz (York/Central York) late in the quarter.
Kelly completed nine-of-16 pass attempted for 155 yards, one score and an interception while also rushing for a career-high 97 yards. Mateo had 64 yards on the ground with three touchdowns while Mosley-Dew had nine rushed for 44 yards.
D.J. McFadden (Willow Grove/Abington) had three catches for 37 yards while Daniels caught two balls for a game-high 46 yards.
Pope made a career-high eight tackles to go along with an interception and a forced fumble.
Bloomsburg travels to Kutztown next Saturday as PSAC East play continues.
