Men's Soccer Takes Advantage of Cal (PA) Own Goal To Score 1-0 Road Win

Box Score (HTML)

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team completed a perfect weekend of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action by taking advantage of an own goal in the final seconds to defeat California (PA), 1-0, Saturday afternoon at the Phillipsburg Complex.

The final sequence began with Nate Conrad (Enola/East Pennsboro) firing a shot on goal that was turned away by Vulcans keeper Shane Donovan with six seconds left to play. Donovan made a diving save, but the ball squibbed away toward the goal line leaving a Vulcans defender to attempt a clear attempt. The defender's attempt instead went flying into the top shelf of the net and in, however, just three seconds before the final buzzer.

The win keeps the Huskies in a deadlock with Mercyhurst atop the PSAC standings with an 8-4-2 record overall and 6-2-0 in conference play. Both the Huskies and Lakers have 18 conference points at the end of the day's action – Mercyhurst defeated Seton Hill, 2-1, on Saturday.

Bloomsburg's defense was again stellar as the Huskies did not allow a single shot on goal from the Vulcans (4-8-1, 3-4-0).

The Huskies held a 4-2 edge in shots in the first period and finished with a 12-6 advantage for the match, forcing Donovan to make seven saves.

Nate Conrad (Enola/East Pennsboro) led the Huskies' offensive pressure with three shot attempts while Austin Transue (Langhorne/Neshaminy) and Josh Smith (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) each had two shots.

Jared Ott (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) finished with his sixth shutout of the year to move into a tie for third all-time in Huskies single season history.

Bloomsburg returns home on Wednesday, hosting Millersville in the regular season finale at Steph Pettit Stadium with a 4:30 p.m. start. Wednesday's match will be Senior Day as well as the Huskies annual Red Card Cancer game.
