@GoBUHuskiesSCOUTING SHIPPENSBURGSaturday will mark the PSAC opener for Shippensburg, which began the year with a pair of non-conference games at home - the Raiders lost, 73-67, to Johnson C. Smith on Nov. 14 and then rebounded the next night for a 79-55 victory over Bowie State before being idle the past week. Sophomore Morgan Griffith netted a career-high 25 points and matched her career-high of 17 rebounds in the win last Saturday. Preseason All-PSAC East pick Stephanie Knauer put home 20 points with nine boards in the season opener.
Vicky Turnasz earned the honor of being PSAC East Freshman of the Week after totaling 16 points with four assists in the first two games of the year, including earning a spot in the starting lineup in the Bowie State victory, finishing with four points, three assists and two rebounds without a turnover.
Picked to finish third in the PSAC East Preseason Coaches Poll, the Raiders are a young team without a single senior and only three juniors. Last year the Raiders finished 17-10 and recorded 79.3 points per game, the most for SU since reaching the National Championship Game in 1995-96.
THE BLOOMSBURG-SHIPPENSBURG SERIES
Shippensburg leads 30-22The Raiders won the very first meeting, 58-54, in 1976 and Shippensburg once dominated the series, winning 12 out of the first 14 games between the schools. Things have changed in recent years, as Bloomsburg entered last year with six straight victories over their PSAC East rival. Shippensburg snapped that streak with their first win in the series since Jan. 19, 2011 with a 92-83 victory at home on Dec. 7, 2013 in the first meeting of the year. It marked just the third time in the
Bill Cleary Era that the Huskies have allowed 90 or more points. The Huskies responded with a 68-65 victory on Feb. 8, coming back from a 63-62 deficit with 1:09 to play -
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) hit a pair of free throws with 52 seconds left and the Huskies didn't look back.
