By Scott Eddy, Assistant Sports Information DirectorBox Score (HTML)CLARION, Pa. – The No. 17-ranked Bloomsburg University women's basketball team used a 25-6 explosion during a six-minute span during the second half to pull away for a 65-48 victory at Clarion on Tuesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover contest.
Bloomsburg (6-1, 4-0 PSAC) stretched its winning streak to six games with another stifling defensive performance – the Huskies limited Clarion (1-7, 0-4) to just 38.5 shooting from the floor (20-of-52) and forced 25 turnovers that resulted in 30 points for the visitors.
Things were in doubt early in the second half when Golden Eagles star Hannah Heeter put in a layup off the glass to cut the Huskies lead to 33-29 with 17:02 to play.
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) put home a jumper on the other end to start a 10-0 blitz including back-to-back 3-pointers from
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) and
Camden Boehner (Gettysburg/Gettysburg Area) for a 43-29 advantage just two minutes later.
From there, the Huskies never looked back.
Heeter continued doing work inside to attempt a comeback, pushing the Golden Eagles back within 47-35 at the 12:16 mark, but another trey from Klunk and then a traditional 3-point play from
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) quickly put out Clarion's rally effort.
Taylor Kaminski (Philadelphia/Archbishop Wood) then registered a layup and Boehner again found the bottom of the net from long range for a 58-35 Huskies lead and complete control over the final 10 minutes.
Pressure defense and strong ball movement gave the Huskies an early lead. While the visitors kept Clarion off-balance offensively,
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) and
Taylor Maldonado (Stroudsburg/Allentown Central Catholic) opened the game red hot from the floor – the pair combined for the Huskies' first 16 points and a 16-5 lead at the 14:09 mark when Maldonado drained a 3-pointer to force a Clarion timeout.
Bloomsburg continued to roll out of that timeout with Simmons putting in a layup for an 18-5 advantage.
Clarion turned the tide with an 8-0 break, cutting to within five at 18-13 before Sadowski ended the run by taking a feed underneath from Boehner and finishing with the layup. Klunk then picked off a Clarion pass and went coast-to-coast for a 22-13 lead with 9:02 left in the opening half.
The Huskies opened their largest lead of the period at 29-17 with 3:20 remaining, but Clarion scored the final six points before intermission to close within 29-23 at the break.
Four Huskies found double-figure scoring – Ford tallied a season-high 13 points along with six rebounds and five assists to pair with Boehner who netted a career-best 13 points. Sadowski and Klunk each registered 10 points apiece as well.
Tania Holmes paced the Golden Eagles with 11 points and Heeter finished with 10 points.
Bloomsburg shot 47.6 percent from beyond the arc (10-21) and 41.0 percent total from the floor (25-61) and led for all but 27 seconds of game time.
Next up is a trip to Pitt-Johnstown Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. in another PSAC crossover contest.
