Box Score (HTML)

BLOOMSBURG – The 17th-ranked Bloomsburg University women's basketball team saw its seven-game winning streak snapped at the hands of No. 25 IUP on Saturday afternoon at Nelson Field House as the Crimson Hawks pulled away down the stretch for a 67-53 victory.

The Huskies now stand at 7-2 overall and 5-1 in PSAC play while IUP moves to 10-0, 6-0.

The Crimson Hawks grabbed control early, doing damage from the perimeter for a 19-10 lead less than eight minutes into the game.

IUP and Bloomsburg came into Saturday's contest ranked first and second respectively in the PSAC in terms of points allowed, and the two top defenses kept each offense off-balance during the early going. The teams turned the ball over 12 times apiece in the first half, with IUP turning those miscues into 13 points while Bloomsburg registered 12 points off turnovers during the opening 20 minutes.

Bloomsburg began to claw its way back, embarking on a 10-3 run to take its first lead of the day on a pair of free throws from Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) for a 30-29 edge with 11 seconds left in the period.

IUP would go into halftime with the lead, however, as Leslie Stapleton beat the buzzer for her fifth 3-pointer of the half off an assist from Marita Mathe to give the Crimson Hawks a 32-30 lead at the break.

Ford opened the second half by netting a jump shot for the tie and Taylor Maldonado (Stroudsburg/Allentown Central Catholic) followed with a layup on the next trip down the floor for a 34-32 lead.

Bloomsburg held a narrow lead for the first five minutes of the half until Amy Fairman drained another 3-pointer for the tie at 41-41 with 14:54 to play.

Ford answered with another jumper, but IUP's Lindsay Stamp was fouled and went to the line on the Hawks' ensuing possession, draining both shots to tie the score once more.

Stamp's free throws began a game-changing run as the Crimson Hawks ran off 12 straight points to seize a 53-43 lead with 9:13 remaining.

From there, IUP remained in control as the Huskies got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

IUP finished with 10 3-pointers on the day (10-for-26), the most by any Huskies opponent since Glenville State hit 13 in last year's NCAA Tournament.  Stapleton led the way, recording a game-high 17 points including five 3-pointers.

Ashley Stoner registered 13 points while Stamp, the PSAC's leading scorer at over 20 points per game entering the day, finished with 11.

For the Huskies, Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) again led the scoring with 13 points as well as six rebounds and five assists. Ford recorded 12 points, six rebounds and four steals.

While IUP shined from beyond the arc, the Huskies struggled to a 2-for-17 total, shooting 38.8 percent in all from the field (19-49) while IUP was at 37.9 percent from the floor (22-58).

The Huskies will break for the holidays before returning to PSAC crossover play Jan. 3-4 at Nelson Field House, hosting Seton Hill on Jan. 3 and California (PA) on Jan. 4.
