BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University defensive team team defeated the offensive team, 42-18, in the annual Maroon and Gold spring football game played on Saturday afternoon on Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium under modified scoring rules.

The Huskies' defense scored points on each of the game's first four possessions, earning points for caused turnovers (four), sacks (two), three-and-outs (two) and fourth-down stops (one). Redshirt sophomore cornerback Jerrin Toomey (York/West York) led the defense by recording three interceptions in a standout performance. Senior linebacker Bryan McCall (Lititz/Warwick) also had an interception as well as two solo tackles.

Other standouts for the defense were redshirt freshman defensive end Scott Beltz (Pen Argyl/Pen Argyl Area), who had five total tackles, along with redshirt sophomore Travon Pugh (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West), freshman Eric Schwartz (York/Central York) and redshirt sophomore Tyler Szaflarski (Greencastle/Greencastle) who all finished with four total tackles each.

The offense earned points for touchdowns (six points), field goals (three), plays of 20 yards or more (two) and point after attempts (one).

Sophomore Lawrence Elliott Jr., an All-PSAC East selection last year as a kick returner but will see time as a running back this fall, scored the first points of the game for the offense by taking a handoff from starting quarterback Tim Kelly (Camp Hill/Cedar Cliff) for the four-yard score.

Six players received carries out of the backfield on the day, led by redshirt freshman Altarique Mosley-Dew (East Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) who rushed for 68 yards on 17 carries. Redshirt sophomore Joe Parsnik (Wilkes-Barre/Coughlin) carried six times for 51 yards while Elliott had eight rushes for 38 yards and redshirt junior Dai'Shon Munger (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross) had six touches for 33 yards.

The highlight of the passing game came on a 43-yard catch from Tim Kelly (Camp Hill/Cedar Cliff) to Trent Daniels (Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township) for a touchdown in the back of the end zone.

Daniels led all receivers with three receptions for 61 yards, including his 43-yard touchdown grab.

Kelly finished the game 8-for-20 with 71 passing yards.

Also taking snaps under center was redshirt freshman Chris Palubinsky (Ringtown/Shenandoah Valley), who was 4-for-9 for 18 yards and an interception. Redshirt sophomore transfer Ryan Henning (Ashland/North Schuylkill) also completed 3-of-8 passes for 22 yards.

The Maroon and Gold Game concludes the spring season for the Huskies. The defending PSAC champions will open the 2014 campaign on the road against Stonehill on Saturday, Sept. 7. The Huskies host their 2014 home-opener on Saturday, Sept. 14 vs. California (PA).
