Huskies Come Back For Win in Men's Basketball

BOX SCORE (HTML)

BLOOMSBURG—Charles Haigler (Charles Town, WV/Hargrave Military Academy)'s jumper with 56 seconds to play put the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team back on top and the Huskies held on for a 74-71 win over West Chester Saturday afternoon at the Nelson Field House.

West Chester led by six points, 67-61, with 3:10 to play after a layup from Cory Blake. The Huskies though came right back with Jon Riles (Philadelphia/Academy of the New Church) driving the lane and scoring to make it 67-63. After a West Chester turnover gave the Huskies the ball back, Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) was fouled on a three-pointer with red-shirt freshman hitting all three shots to make it a 67-66 game with 1:39 to play.

The Huskies forced another West Chester turnover on the next trip down the floor. Haigler then hit a jumper with 56 seconds left putting the Huskies back on top 69-67. After Blake missed a jumper for the Golden Rams, Riles was fouled and hit one of two for a two-point Huskies lead. On the miss though the ball was off of West Chester and the Huskies retained possession. Alssene Saintillus was then fouled and also hit one of two making it a 70-67 game with 30 seconds left.

Mike Wilson then drove the length of the floor, scored and was also fouled on the play. Wilson missed the free throw though that would have tied the score.

After the Huskies rebounded the miss, Saintillus was fouled and hit both shots making it 72-69. West Chester pulled to within a point again when Parrish Grant scored on a layup with 12 ticks left. Riles was then fouled on the inbounds play and hit both free throws for a 74-71 lead. West Chester then pushed the ball up the floor and got a wide-open look for a 3-pointer in the corner from Matt Wisely, but the shot rimmed in and out and the Huskies poked the ball away preserving the win.

Bloomsburg led the entire first half opening its biggest lead at 15-6 with 14:22 to play on a layup by Haigler. West Chester later closed to within a point, 19-18, on Tyrell Long's layup with 10:05 to go in the half, but the Huskies held the lead at the break 36-32.

In the second half the Golden Rams briefly took a 42-40 lead before the Huskies rallied and went on an 11-2 run. Riles and Anthony McKie (Blue Bell/Plymouth Whitemarsh) each drained three-pointers that put Bloomsburg on top 51-44 with 12:21 to play.

After a West Chester timeout the Golden Rams came back using a 13-1 run rally to go on top 57-52 with 8:04 to play. Back-to-back 3-pointers from McKie and Mortellite though helped the Huskies keep the game close and setting up the wild final three minutes of play.

Riles finished with 18 points and nine assists, while Mortellite chipped in with 14. Saintillus and Haigler each finished with 13 for the Huskies.

Blake finished with 18 points, while Wisely and Long added 10 each for West Chester, now 7-9, 5-6 in the PSAC.

The Huskies visit Mansfield on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
