Saintilus Reaches 1,000 Career Points as Huskies Race Past Millersville, 84-66

Box Score (HTML)  |  Video Highlights

BLOOMSBURG – It was a memorable night for the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team – the Huskies received standout performances throughout the lineup and senior Alssene Saintilus (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) recorded his 1,000th career point as Bloomsburg ran past Millersville, 84-66, on Wednesday night in Nelson Field House.

The Huskies (8-9, 4-9 PSAC) started strong and dominated the contest, leading for 34:23 of game time.

The teams remained separated by five points or fewer for the majority of the first half, before back-to-back 3-pointers from Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) and Alex Prislupsky (Olyphant/Mid-Valley) stretched the Husky lead to 34-25 at the 5:03 mark.

Mortellite sparked the Huskies during the opening period, hitting six of eight shot attempts for 15 points. Bloomsburg grabbed a double-digit lead for the first time in the final minute of the half when Jameal Tucker (Philadelphia/Academy at Palumbo) registered a put-back for a 44-34 advantage at halftime.

Millersville (10-10, 6-8) cut its deficit to just five at 46-41 following a free throw from Tavon Parker, but as was the trend for the Marauders all night, Parker missed the second attempt and an ensuing foul sent Saintilus to the stripe on the other end. The Huskies senior made both, and Millersville never got any closer the rest of the way.

Saintilus' shots at the line started a 17-5 burst from the Huskies, which received an exclamation mark when Ashkan Naderi (Herndon, VA/Herndon) connected from long range for a commanding 63-46 lead with 10:23 to go.

Bloomsburg never relinquished control the rest of the way with Millersville remaining ice cold from the floor. The Marauders could muster just 27.8 percent shooting (20-of-72) while the Huskies were hot, finishing at 50 percent (27-54).

Down the stretch, the only drama was whether Saintilus would reach his personal milestone.

He entered the night needing 13 points to reach 1,000 for his collegiate career, and finally reached the mark by sinking a free throw with a minute remaining. After receiving congratulations from his teammates, Saintilus made the second at the line to complete a tremendous stat line of 14 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and two assists.

For Millersville, Eddie Callender led the way with 17 points while Shawn Williams tallied 16.

Moustapha Noumbissi (Upper Darby/Delaware County Christian School) gave the Huskies a pair of players with double-double efforts for the first time this year, recording 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Charles Haigler (Charles Town, WV/Hargrave Military Academy) was also strong on both ends of the court with 15 points as well as three steals.

The Huskies return to action Saturday at 4 p.m. against Lock Haven in a road PSAC East matchup.

GAME NOTES: Saintilus scored 436 points with Chestnut Hill College over two seasons before transferring to the Huskies for his junior year … Bloomsburg posted a season high 12 blocks, the most for the Huskies since also having 12 swats on Nov. 16, 2009 at Chestnut Hill … Saintilus scored in double figures for the eighth straight game and notched his third double-double of the year … Tucker had a career high seven rebounds … Bloomsburg outrebounded Millersville by a 47-38 margin … The Huskies have shot 50 percent or better five times this year, including three out of the past four games.
