BLOOMSBURG – A tremendous first half from Seton Hill was enough to overcome a late rally effort from the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team as the visiting Griffins held on for a 67-58 victory on Saturday afternoon at Nelson Field House.
The Griffins (3-8, 2-5 PSAC) were red hot from the floor, opening a 38-23 lead at halftime and shot over 54 percent for the entire game.
Seton Hill set the tone from the outset, racing to a 27-11 advantage at the 7:10 mark of the first half, ultimately taking a 15-point lead to the break.
Bloomsburg (6-5, 2-5) showed fight following intermission, opening the second period on a 10-4 break to slice the deficit to single digits at 42-33 following back-to-back-to-back buckets inside from
Alssene Saintilus (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown),
Charles Haigler (Charles Town, WV/Hargrave Military Academy) and
Moustapha Noumbissi (Upper Darby/Delaware County Christian School) with still 16:44 to play.
Noah Davis, the leading 3-point shooter in the PSAC this season, put his long range shooting on display with a shot from beyond the arc on the next trip down the floor to stretch the advantage to double digits once more at 45-33.
The Huskies continued to chip away, however. After nearly three minutes without a score from either side,
Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) connected from downtown to start a 7-0 break.
Wes Lyons (Millville/Millville) brought the Nelson Field House crowd alive with a steal and then raced down the court for a two-handed slam to bring the Huskies to within 45-40 and still 12:51 showing on the clock, forcing the Griffins to call for time.
Seton Hill stemmed the tide, but the Huskies continued to remain within striking distance, still trailing by only seven at 54-47 with 7:42 to go following a pair of free throws from Haigler.
A layup from Seton Hill's David Windsor and, following a defensive stop, another lay-in from Spencer Casson stretched the cushion to 58-47 and the visitors were able to hold their lead down the stretch thanks to shooting 25-for-46 from the field for the afternoon.
Three Griffins reached double-figure scoring – Windsor led all scorers with 22 points while Davis chipped in with 17 and Casson tallied 11.
For the Huskies, Mortellite delivered 13 points with Saintilus registering 12 and
Alex Prislupsky (Olyphant/Mid-Valley) notched 11 points.
Bloomsburg is back in action on Sunday afternoon, hosting California (PA) at Nelson Field House with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m.Â
