SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team went through the entire 2014 calendar year without a loss in a true road game and it continued that trend by winning its first contest of 2015 away from Nelson Field House, taking a convincing 80-47 victory over host Slippery Rock on Wednesday evening.
With the win, the No. 20 Huskies move to 10-2 overall and 8-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play, stretching their road winning streak to 16 consecutive games dating to December 2013. Bloomsburg also finished PSAC crossover play with a 5-1 mark against Western Division squads.
The Huskies came out of the gates slowly, trailing 8-4 in the first four minutes, prompting head coach
Bill Cleary to call timeout and insert four new players into the lineup. The Rock (6-7, 2-7) remained strong through much of the first half, opening up a seven-point lead at 24-17 following a bucket in the lane from D'Asia Chambers at the 9:44 mark.
Bloomsburg then broke out an 11-0 run sparked by eight points from
Taylor Maldonado (Stroudsburg/Allentown Central Catholic) to sprint ahead, 28-24, just two and a half minutes later.
Slippery Rock closed to 28-26 on a jumper from Taylor Siggers, but from there the Huskies finished the half with a 16-2 breakaway to enter halftime with a 44-28 lead.
The Huskies were never threatened again. Bloomsburg's defense clamped down on The Rock, holding the hosts to a mere 22 percent shooting from the floor after halftime (6-for-27) as the PSAC East leaders continued to pull away.
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) dominated in the post early in the second period, scoring eight of the Huskies' first 10 points after intermission as Bloomsburg raced to a 56-32 cushion less than four minutes into the half.
From there, Bloomsburg's lead did not shrink below 21 the rest of the way.
Ten Huskies worked into the scoring column led by Sadowski's season high 24 points. The redshirt junior also matched a career high set just this past Saturday with six blocks, a number she also reached in the weekend victory over Seton Hill.
Reigning PSAC East Freshman of the Week
Camden Boehner (Gettysburg/Gettysburg Area) stayed hot, establishing a new career high in scoring – during the first half alone. Boehner tallied 14 points during the opening half, ultimately finishing with 19 points on 5-of-7 shooting including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Maldonado registered nine points as did junior guard Taylor Kaminiski. Sophomore
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) finished with seven points and seven rebounds as the Huskies shot over 43 percent from the floor (32-74) and combined for 23 total assists as a team.
Slippery Rock could not gain traction offensively after the opening minutes, finishing at just 31 percent (18-58) from the floor and turned the ball over 26 times.
Chambers was the standout for The Rock, turning in 16 points and 14 rebounds. Taylor Siggers also netted 14 points.
Bloomsburg returns to action on Saturday in a battle for first in the PSAC East against rival West Chester (11-2, 8-2) at the Nelson Field House with tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
