Whitney Kowski (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional)'s goal in the 25
th minute was all the Bloomsburg University field hockey team needed to defeat Mercyhurst Saturday afternoon in a PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) game.
The Huskies controlled the action early in the game as they had three shots in the first four minutes, but were unable to find the back of the cage. The Lakers then went on the offensive and had several penalty corners and shots on goal, but were not able to get one past
Lindsay Cassel (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin).
The two teams would trade penalty corners and possession until the 25
th minute when
Whitney Kowski (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) took a pass from
Stephanie Halsted (Fairfax Station, VA/South County) and put it in to give Bloomsburg the 1-0 lead. It was Kowski's third goal and Halsted's fourth assists of the season.
In the second half the Huskies had several chances to increase their lead but their shots were turned away by Sam Takac of Mercyhurst. The Lakers had three penalty corners in the final 15 minutes but were unable to get a shot on frame. In goal,
Lindsay Cassel (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin) made seven saves and recorded her fifth shutout of the season.
For the game, Bloomsburg held a 17-12 advantage in shots and and finished the game with eight penalty corners.
Bloomsburg, 9-8, 5-4 PSAC, will finish up its three-game road trip next Saturday at Shippensburg in the final game of the regular season. Game-time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
