Football Team Wins In Two Overtimes

Box Score HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG—Joe Parsnik (Wilkes-Barre/Coughlin)'s two-yard run in the second overtime lifted the Bloomsburg University (6-4, 4-2 PSAC East) football team to a 31-28 win over Lock Haven (2-7, 2-4 PSAC East) on Saturday afternoon in a PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Eastern Division matchup.

The first overtime was scoreless with the Huskies turning the ball over on downs after a holding call negated what would have been a first down run by quarterback Tim Kelly (Camp Hill/Cedar Cliff). On fourth down Kelly's pass to Lamont Veal (Upper Darby/Cardinal O'Hara) in the end zone was short. But on the play Lock Haven was called for its second sideline infraction and on the change of possession was facing a first and 15 from the 30-yard line. On first down a bad exchange at center and quarterback Caleb Walton was fumbled with Joe Wetty (Downingtown/Downingtown East) recovering for the Huskies.

In the second overtime Walton drove the Bald Eagles to the Huskies five-yard line where the drive stalled and Alex Bourmerhi kicked a 22-yard field goal. On Bloomsburg's possession of the second overtime Lawrence Elliott Jr. (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) gained 13 yards on two rushing plays putting the ball at the Lock Haven 12. Kelly then completed a pass for six yards to Shane Quinn (Levittown/Neshaminy). Parsnik then carried four yards to the two, before going in for the gamewinner on the next play.

It looked as though the Huskies would lose in regulation after a muffed punt return by Elliott for the Huskies gave Lock Haven the ball at the Bloomsburg 32-yard line with 1:17 to play. After moving the ball on three plays to the 25, Bourmerhi was wide right with a 40-yard field goal try as time expired forcing overtime.

Bloomsburg had tied the score at 25 on a 24-yard field goal from Tyler Smith (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) with 2:18 to play. The Huskies had driven from their own 11-yard line following a Lock Haven score. Bloomsburg ate up nearly eight minutes on the drive converting two, third-down situations to keep the drive alive. However, after getting a third and goal at the one, a false start penalty pushed the Huskies back five yards. On third and goal from there, Kelly's pass was off the mark forcing the field goal from Smith.

Lock Haven took the early lead in the game with Walton hitting Dan Krupko from one-yard out on the opening series. Bloomsburg tied the score midway through the period when Kelly connected with Connor Gades (West Chester/Unionville) on an 11-yard TD pass.

The Bald Eagles went ahead 10-7 on Bourmerhi's 27-yard field goal with 6:06 to play following another muffed punt return. On the ensuing drive the Huskies drover 77 yards with Kelly hitting Gades from 38-yards out to put the Huskies on top 14-10 at the break.

In the third period the Bald Eagles rallied and took the lead. After recovering a fumble deep in Huskies territory, Lock Haven had to settle for a 38-yard field goal from Bourmerhi to make it 14-13. Then later in the period Walton his Shawn Seif with a five-yard pass, but the two-point conversion failed leaving the visitors with a 19-14 lead.

The Huskies regained the lead early in the fourth period with Kelly going in from a yard out to cap a 10-play, 63-yard drive with Elliott scoring on a two-point run to make it 22-19. Lock Haven, though, came right back with a scoring drive of its own. The Bald Eagles moved 75-yards in eight plays with Walton hitting Del'Vaughn Dennis with an 18-yard pass on third and goal from the 18. The play came after Lock Haven misfired on a third down pass, but was called for holding. After Bloomsburg accepted, Walton connected for the go-ahead score. But Bourmerhi missed the extra point giving the Huskies life and setting up a wild finish.

The win keeps the Huskies chance to notch its seventh win of the season next week in the finale against Seton Hill. Bloomsburg has won at least seven games in a season for 16 straight years.

Elliott Jr. had another record-setting day for the Huskies gaining 271 yards on a career-best 37 carries. Kelly finished with his best passing yardage day of the year going 16-31 for 201 yards and two scores and is now number two all-time at Bloomsburg in passing yards with 7,385 yards. He needs just 90 more yards to pass Eric Miller who finished his regular season with 7,474. Miller's total doesn't include 1,236 yards passing in four NCAA playoff games in 2000. (NCAA statistic policies at the time prohibited post-season stats from a player's career total.

Gades finished with six catches for 102 yards, a career-high, and two scores, while Parsnik caught four passes for 44 yards and had 37 yards rushing. Defensively Jerrin Toomey (York/West York) had nine tackles, while Donovan Morris (Philadelphia/George Washington) and Garrett Pope (Northumberland/Shikellamy) each had seven. As a team the Huskies had four sacks in the game and eight tackles for loss.

The Huskies will face Seton Hill on Nov. 14 at noon at Redman Stadium.
