Women’s Basketball Dominant In 87-51 Victory Over Mansfield Saturday

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team arguably put together its best effort of the season on Saturday afternoon as it posted an 87-51 win over visiting Mansfield University at Nelson Field House. The Huskies snapped a modest two-game losing streak and improved to 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings. The Mountaineers dropped to 3-7 overall and 1-7 in the PSAC East.

The Huskies have now won 16 consecutive meetings between the two schools and improved to 59-10 lifetime against the Mountaineers. Bloomsburg has not lost to Mansfield since February 4, 2009 – a 52-46 road setback.

Bloomsburg got at least one point from ten different players on Saturday afternoon as the team shot 52.9% (36-of-68) from the field. Redshirt senior Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) and junior Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) combined to score 46 points on 21-of-26 shooting to lead the way.

Sadowski finished the afternoon with a season-high 24 points on 12-of-16 from the field. She also added six rebounds and six blocked shots – one shy of her career-high of seven she recorded earlier in the season against Mercyhurst. Hopkins, meanwhile, added 22 points on 9-of-10 from the floor, 2-of-2 from long distance, and 2-of-2 from the foul line. She added nine rebounds, six assists, and three steals.

After a bit of a sluggish start for both teams, the Huskies ended the first quarter on a 14-2 run to break a 6-6 tie that existed with 5:48 left in the opening stanza. Sadowski and Hopkins each had four points during the run while freshmen Julia Gantz (Havertown/Archbishop John Carroll) and Alyssa Mack (Walnutport/Allentown Central Catholic) helped out with a three-pointer apiece.

Bloomsburg started strong in the second quarter and extended the lead to 31-10 with 7:39 left after a layup from Hopkins. The Mountaineers cut the led to as few as 13 with 51 seconds left in the second before Sadowski and Hopkins converted baskets to close out the first half with the Huskies ahead by a 42-25 margin.

Hopkins finished with 17 points in the first half while Sadowski had 14 points and four blocks in the opening twenty minutes.

The Huskies extended their lead in the third quarter and took a 56-28 advantage after a layup from junior Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) with 5:38 left in the stanza. Mansfield got the margin down to 22 before Bloomsburg went on a mini 10-4 run to close out the quarter with a 66-38 lead.

Both coaches emptied the benches in the fourth quarter with Bloomsburg's bench outscoring the Mansfield reserves, 12-3, during a final period that saw the Huskies outscore the Mountaineers, 21-13, for the final margin of victory.

Sadowski and Hopkins were the only Huskies to reach double figures on Saturday and they became the first duo to record at least 20 points in the same game since Sadowski and Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) each scored 20 in a victory over Gannon on March 13, 2015 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Klunk finished with nine points and six assists while junior Alex Ross (Lancaster/Manheim Township) and Gantz had eight points apiece. The Huskies also got a career-high six points from freshman Marissa Molnar (Erie/McDowell High School) and the first collegiate points from freshmen Madeline Murtin (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) (3) and Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) (1) in the win. Mack (5) and fellow freshman Casey Warley (West Chester/Bayard Rustin) (1) combined for the other six points.

Katie Fitzpatrick led the Mountaineers with 21 points and 13 rebounds while Tianna Jackson finished with 10.

Bloomsburg will play one final game during the 2015 portion of the regular season with that coming on Wednesday, December 30 against the Rams of Philadelphia University at Nelson Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
