CARY, N.C. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team dropped a pair of games with California (PA) at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
GAME 1 – Cal U 10, Bloomsburg 3 (BOX SCORE)
In the opening game, the Vulcans jumped out to an early by using some small ball. Mick Fennell singled to lead off and then moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. He would score the first run of the game two batters later on a sac fly from David Marcus.
The Vulcans then took control of the contest with a four-run third, with the big blow coming in the form of a two-run single off the bat of Will Kaufman.
Cal scored twice in the fifth and three times in the sixth to break it open before Bloomsburg could push two runs across in the last of the seventh on a solo home run from Damin Muth (Breinigsville/Parkland) and an RBI single by Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton).
Cory Craig (1-1) went six innings, allowing just one run to pick up the victory for Cal. Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) (0-1) was tagged with the loss in his first game on the mound for the Huskies, lasting three innings and allowing five runs. Nate Reigner (Sinking Spring/Governor Mifflin) pitched a scoreless seventh in his Huskies debut.
Casselberry went 2-for-3 to lead the offense.

GAME 2 – Cal U 3, Bloomsburg 1 (BOX SCORE)
The Vulcans came out on top in a game two pitchers duel.
Like in the first game, Cal U scored first by again doing the little things to force in a run. A walk and a single put runners at the corners. The Vulcans then used a double steal with Jared Grove swiping home for the game's first run.
Bloomsburg tied it in the home half of the inning, using two wild pitches and an error to score an unearned run for the 1-1 deadlock.
A defensive miscue went the way of the Vulcans in the fourth, allowing the inning to stay alive and two runs to cross the plate unearned.
Those runs ended up being the difference as Cal U starter Luke Burton (1-1) went five innings and did not surrender an earned run, giving up just three hits while striking out 10.
Alex Ziegler closed the door to pick up the save with a pair of scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Sean McCloskey (Warminster/Archbishop Wood) started for Bloomsburg and picked up a no decision, lasting two innings while allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout. Zach Newmyer (New Cumberland/Red Land) (0-1) was charged with a hard luck loss after two unearned runs crossed while he was on the mound.
Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport/South Williamsport) (1.2 innings, one strikeout, four hits, no walks) and Cody Heane (McClure/Indian Valley) (two innings, one hit, no walks) combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Eric Frain (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan), Austin Edgette (Exton/Downingtown East), Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) and Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) all had one hit apiece to account for the Huskies' four hits.Â
