GAME TWOBLOOMSBUIRG—Freshman
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie/Pennridge) went a combined 5-6 with four runs scored to help lead the Bloomsburg University softball team to a sweep of Shippensburg on Monday in a PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Eastern Division matchup. The Huskies won by scores of 3-1 and 9-5.

In the opener it was a classic pitching duel between the Huskies
Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run) and Shippensburg's Makenzie Lynn with both pitchers fanning six batters each through the first three innings.

Shippensburg (10-13, 5-11 PSAC East) took the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Maddie Justice led off with a single with Taylor Dorman coming in to pinch-run. Dorman moved to second on a bunt and scored on a double by Taylor Weisman. Parker, though, got the next two batters to end the threat and keep it a 1-0 game.

The Huskies threatened in the bottom of the fourth with
Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) singling and moving to second on a bunt. But Lynn also got the next two outs to keep it 1-0.

In the bottom of the sixth Mayhew led off the inning with a long home run off Lynn to left to tie the game. After a line out, Bertoni reached on an error and went to third on a double by Parker off the fence in left. Shippensburg then brought in Quincy Lewis with
Valerie Carcasses (Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) drawing a walk to load the bases.
Sarah Bortner (Glenville/South Western) then delivered a pinch, two-run single scoring Bertoni and Parker and giving the Huskies a 3-1 lead. The RBI were the first two of the year for Bortner.

In the top of the seventh Parker set down the Raiders in order to earn her eighth win of the year. Parker finished with 13 strikeouts and allowed just one walk.

Mayhew finished game one 3-3 with the solo homer.

In the nightcap the ball was jumping off the bats early on. In the bottom of the first Mayhew led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Bertoni was hit by a pitch and took second on a ground out with Mayhew holding at third. Parker then delivered a single driving in Mayhew and Bertoni. Carcasses followed with a single putting runners at first and second.
Anna McElroy (Jessup/Valley View) then singled scoring Parker for a 3-0 lead.

Shippensburg got two back in the second inning when Weisman walked and came around to score on a homer by Liz Parkins.

The Huskies added three runs in the second inning. Mayhew singled and later scored on a two-run homer by Bertoni. After a pitching change, O'Connor hit a solo shot to center making it 6-2.

In the fourth Shippensburg again narrowed the lead to two getting two solo homers in the inning to make it 6-4.

The Huskies pushed the lead to 9-5 with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) had an RBI single followed by a two-run single from O'Connor.

In the top of the seventh inning Shippensburg loaded the bases against
Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) with two outs. The Raiders fifth run was forced in on a hit batter bringing the tying run to the plate. But Tomaschik got a line out to left field to end the game.

Mayhew was 2-3 with three runs scored, while O'Connor was 3-4 with three RBI. In all the Huskies banged out 13 hits in the game and 20 for the twinbill.

Tomaschik got the win in relief going the final four innings and allowing four hits and striking out three and walking two.

Bloomsburg, 14-8, 9-3 in the PSAC East, plays at home on Wednesday against Lock Haven starting at 2:30 p.m.
