BLOOMSBURG – An offensive blitz in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader with Shippensburg gave the Bloomsburg University baseball team an afternoon split in PSAC East play, winning game 2, 18-9, after dropping game one, 8-5.
The Huskies now stand 11-17 overall and 10-14 in PSAC East play while Shippensburg moves to 22-20, 15-9.
In between games Saturday, the Huskies honored their 1995 North Atlantic Regional Championship team. Many members of that squad returned to campus to celebrate the 20th anniversary of that team with a ceremony held between games.
GAME ONE – Shippensburg 8, Bloomsburg 5 | Box Score
The Huskies grabbed an early lead when Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) doubled in two runs with a rope down the right field line.
Huskies starter Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) made the lead stick until running into trouble in the third. The Raiders got their leadoff man aboard on a single before Austin Allison homered to right for a 2-2 tie. An infield hit leading to a Huskies throwing error later allowed a third run to score as Shippensburg seized its first lead of the afternoon.
Bloomsburg answered with a three-spot of its own in the home half of the inning, starting the scoring with an RBI ground out by Ravel. Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) kept the inning going with a run-producing double to right before Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) added an RBI single for a 5-3 edge.
Shippensburg got one run back in the fourth and another in the fifth to make it a tie game heading for the sixth. The Raiders opened up the game at that point, breaking the deadlock on a homer to right off the bat of Ryan McMillen. Two more runs would score in the inning and the Raiders would not look back.
Raiders starter Mark Curis (4-5) picked up the win with a complete game on the mound, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Warren (1-2) finished with 5.2 innings of work, walking four and striking out seven. Cody Heane (McClure/Indian Valley) tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
GAME TWO – Bloomsburg 18, Shippensburg 9 | Box Score
The first inning alone lasted nearly an hour and saw over 80 pitches thrown combined between the two teams as the Huskies would win a slugfest in the nightcap.
Shippensburg started strong with a four-run first, but Bloomsburg answered and then some in the home half of the frame. The Huskies scored 10 times in the first inning, sending 14 men to the plate with the biggest blow coming off the bat of Damin Muth (Breinigsville/Parkland), who unloaded a bases-clearing double off the fence in left to plate three.
Shippensburg threatened to come back several times, scoring twice in the fourth and three times in the fifth, but Bloomsburg never relinquished control.
Three runs crossed the plate for the Huskies in the fourth following a two-RBI double from Almand and a steal of home by Ravel. In the fifth, Ravel scored two more runs by drilling a double to right center.
Finally, in the sixth, Austin Edgette (Exton/Downingtown East) gave the Huskies insurance with a single up the middle to score two runs before Eric Frain (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) brought home another with his hit through the right side.
The offense was enough to keep Shippensburg at bay despite the Raiders hitting four home runs, including two from McMillen.
Zachary Meyer (Muncy Valley/Sullivan County) started and went 3.2 innings for the Huskies with three strikeouts. Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport/South Williamsport) (2-1) earned the win in relief with 3.1 innings of work, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
Muth led the charge at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Edgette, Frain, Ravel and Brady West (Harleysville/North Penn) all had two hits apiece with West also stealing two bases and scoring twice.
Bloomsburg returns to action Sunday vs. Slippery Rock in non-conference action. The Huskies will honor the members of their senior class during Sunday's doubleheader action which has first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Danny Litwhiler Field.
