INDIANA, Pa. – The bats came alive for the Bloomsburg University baseball team in a 19-7 game one victory at IUP on Tuesday, but the offense dried up in a 12-5 setback in the nightcap of the non-conference twin bill as the Huskies settled for a road doubleheader split.
Â
Bloomsburg stands at 13-19 overall on the season after Tuesday's action while IUP moves to 20-19-1.
Â
GAME ONE – Bloomsburg 19, IUP 7 | Box Score Â
The Huskies cranked out a season-high 19 runs with an offensive explosion that started from the very first inning of the early game.
Â
Bloomsburg's offense left its mark on the contest right away, sending 11 men to the plate in the first inning.
Eric Frain (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) got the scoring started with an RBI double to center and
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) followed with a single up the middle for the second run of the game. A wild pitch and walk drawn by
Brady West (Harleysville/North Penn) made it a 4-0 score, leaving the bases loaded for leadoff man
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township). The freshman continued his recent hot streak by making the most of his second at-bat of the inning, ripping a bases-clearing double to right center for a 7-0 cushion after half an inning.Â
Â
IUP homered twice in the home half of the first and cut the lead to 7-3, but the Huskies stayed hot at the plate.
Â
Bloomsburg scored twice in the second when
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) brought a pair of runs in with a single through the left side and then added another run on an Almand sacrifice fly in the fourth with a third inning RBI ground out from Frain sandwiched in between.
Â
The Huskies blew the game wide open with an eight-run fifth. Bloomsburg played long ball in the inning with two home runs –
Cy Treaster (Lewistown/Mifflin County) drilled his first career grand slam before West delivered his first career home run, a two-run shot to give the Huskies 19 runs on the afternoon.
Â
Benson went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles with
Damin Muth (Breinigsville/Parkland) also posting a 3-for-4 line along with three runs scored. Treaster went 2-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored while both Almand and West drove in three runs apiece, each also stealing a base.
Â
The run support was more than enough for
Zach Newmyer (New Cumberland/Red Land) (1-2) who picked up his first collegiate victory in his first start as a Husky. Newmyer allowed seven runs on seven hits but struck out a career high eight batters.
Â
Ryan Uhl had five RBIs including two home runs for IUP.
Â
GAME TWO – IUP 12, Bloomsburg 5 | Box ScoreÂ
IUP grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first with an unearned run, but the Huskies evened the score with a home run off the bat of Almand for a 1-1 tie in the second.
Â
The Crimson Hawks scored another run in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 edge, but the Huskies tied the game again in the fourth when Treaster delivered his second home run of the day with a shot to left center and a 2-2 deadlock.
Â
The hosts answered again in the home half of the frame, though, taking the lead for good on a two-run homer from Zac LaNeve.
Â
An eight-run inning in the sixth from the Crimson Hawks effectively put the game away with the biggest blow coming in the form of a grand slam from Uhl who continued a tremendous day at the plate.
Â
Bloomsburg scored three times in the seventh on an RBI double from
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) and a two-run single by Muth.
Â
Mike Vranesich (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) (0-1) started and worked 5.1 innings, striking out five and allowing eight runs on nine hits.
Â
Michael Klingensmith (1-0) got the win for IUP with six innings of two-run ball with six punchouts.
Â
Muth was the lone Huskies player with multiple hits in the nightcap, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Â
Bloomsburg returns to action in a crucial four-game set with East Stroudsburg beginning at home on Friday. The season-ending series will determine the No. 4 seed from the Eastern Division in the upcoming PSAC Tournament.
