Huskies Smack Three Home Runs in Game Two Win For Doubleheader Split at ESU

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team finished its 2015 season by splitting a doubleheader at East Stroudsburg on Saturday as the bats came alive in a 10-1 game two victory after dropping game one by a 5-3 score.

The Huskies, who needed to win both games in order to have a chance at a tiebreaker to reach the PSAC Tournament, wrap the season with a 14-22 overall record and an 11-17 mark in the PSAC East. East Stroudsburg, meanwhile, clinched the No. 4 seed in the East with a 28-17 overall record and a 13-15 mark in the conference.

GAME ONE – ESU 5, Bloomsburg 3  |  Box Score

The Warriors scored four times in the first inning to take control, eliminating the Huskies from playoff contention with a game one victory.

After a rough first inning, Huskies starter Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) settled down and finished allowing five runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Huskies tried to claw back, scoring twice in the fifth. Bloomsburg did its damage with two outs – Damin Muth (Breinigsville/Parkland) was hit by a pitch and Cy Treaster (Lewistown/Mifflin County) then worked a walk. Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) followed with a triple to score both runners, putting the Huskies on the board. Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) then stung a ball right at the second baseman to end the threat.

Bloomsburg scored again in the sixth on an RBI ground out from Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township). The Huskies went in order in the seventh, however, to end the game.

Six different players accounted for six Bloomsburg hits in the game. Tyler Eckman (1-1) earned the win for ESU with five innings of work on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Conner Crookham picked up the save by striking out the side in the seventh.

GAME TWO – Bloomsburg 10, ESU 1  |  Box Score

Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) gave the Huskies an early game two lead with a two-run home run to left field after an infield single by Baiada.

ESU got a run back in the fourth following a Huskies error, but Bloomsburg broke the game open in the fifth.

The Huskies batted around in the fifth inning, ultimately scoring four times. Treaster got the scoring started by drilling an RBI ground-rule double before Kirman delivered a run-producing single. Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) then worked a bases loaded walk to force in a third run before Brady West (Harleysville/North Penn) drove in the fourth run of the inning with an infield single.

Three more runs crossed the plate in the sixth as the Huskies played long ball. Muth first smacked his second home run of the series, a two-run shot, and later in the inning Baiada then went deep with a solo home run.

Zachary Meyer (Muncy Valley/Sullivan County) was excellent on the mound for Bloomsburg, earning his second win of the year to move to 2-1 by tossing four innings and not allowing an earned run. The redshirt freshman starter walked two and struck out two. Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport/South Williamsport) was credited with the save, throwing three innings of scoreless relief while allowing only two hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

Andrew Furber (3-2) was tagged with the loss for ESU, surrendering two runs in his two innings of work.

Baiada led the charge at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 game while Benson, Muth and Austin Edgette (Exton/Downingtown East) all had two hits apiece as the Huskies finished with 14 hits as a team in the second game.

Benson's strong second game gives him a .392 batting average for the season, best on the team this spring. Muth's five home runs and 29 RBIs were both team highs for the 2014 PSAC East Freshman of the Year.
