HTML BOX SCOREBLOOMSBURG—The 11
th-ranked Bloomsburg University football team dropped its season opener to visiting Stonehill College on Saturday, 27-10, at Danny Hale Field at Robert B. Redman Stadium. It was the Huskies first loss at home in a season opener since 1999.
Â
Stonehill got on the board first taking advantage of a Bloomsburg fumble to set up a short scoring drive. Bloomsburg's Lawrence Elliot fumbled at the Huskies 23-yard line with Donovan Phanor recovering for the Skyhawks. Six plays later quarterback Matt Foltz hit Corey White with a four-yard TD pass giving Stonehill a 7-0 lead.
Â
The Skyhawks second score was also set up off a Bloomsburg turnover. With the Huskies moving into Stonehill territory, quarterback
Tim Kelly (Camp Hill/Cedar Cliff) was intercepted by Phanor who returned the ball to the Bloomsburg 47-yard line. A personal foul call against the Huskies moved the ball to the 32-yard line. Stonehill's drive stalled though at the Huskies five-yard line with Steve Grzywacz hitting a 22-yard field goal.
Â
Bloomsburg responded by moving from its own 25-yard line to the Skyhawks 15-yard line with the big play being a 30-yard pass from Kelly to
Chad Hoffman (Drums/Hazleton). The drive stalled though with
Tyler Smith (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) coming on to hit a 32-yard field goal with three seconds left in the half.
Â
In the third period Stonehill got the only points when Colin Markus rushed two yards for a score capping a 42-yard scoring drive to make it 17-3.
Â
Meanwhile the Huskies were struggling to move the ball and were forced to punt on their first four possessions of the second half with the fifth drive stopped on an interception.
Â
Stonehill added two more scores in the fourth period. The first on a 28-yard scoring pass from Foltz to Gordon McLeod and the second on a 25-yard field goal from Grzywacz.
Â
Bloomsburg got its lone touchdown with just 37 seconds to play when
Nate Hoenl (Whitehall/Whitehall) caught a 14-yard scoring pass from Kelly to make the final 27-10. The touchdown kept a Huskies streak of scoring at least one touchdown in 96 straight games dating back to the final game of the 2006 season.

Bloomsburg, 0-1, plays at California (PA) next Saturday with kickoff at 1 p.m.
