VIDEO HIGHLIGHTSBLOOMSBURG, Pa. – It was a night to remember at the Nelson Field House on Wednesday.
Â
Redshirt senior
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) put together a performance for the ages, pouring in a school-record 43 points, to lift the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team to an 88-62 thumping of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East-leading Shippensburg University. With the win, the Huskies moved to within two games of the Raiders as they improved to 12-6 overall and 9-5 in the PSAC East. Shippensburg dropped to 15-3 overall and 11-3 in conference play.
Â
Sadowski's 43 points broke the previous school record of 39 which was set by Bloomsburg Hall-of-Famer, Theresa Lorenzi, who accomplished the feat on February 13, 1988 in a 115-102 Husky victory at Cheyney. The 43 points tied for the 11th highest single game total in PSAC history and were just five shy of tying the PSAC record of 48 points set by Millersville's Terri Gunder during the 1970-71 season.
Â
Not only did Sadowski break the school-record, but she did it efficiently. The PSAC leader in field goal percentage entering the game, Sadowski made 18 of her 23 field goal attempts and was a perfect 7-of-7 at the free throw line – all in just 29 minutes. She also tied the team-high with eight rebounds and blocked three shots on the night.
Â
The redshirt senior started the night by being honored before the game for becoming the 21st player in program history to record 1,000 career points after scoring 27 in Bloomsburg's win at Cheyney on January 20. It was just a sign of things to come.
Â
Sadowski scored Bloomsburg's first 12 points of the game and guided the Huskies to an 18-12 advantage after the opening quarter.
Â
She added seven more points in the second quarter while junior
Alex Ross (Lancaster/Manheim Township), who also had a strong game for the Huskies, nailed a pair of three-pointers in the period as Bloomsburg outscored the Raiders 18-9 in the frame to build a 36-21 advantage at halftime.
Â
It was, arguably, the strongest half for the Huskies all season as they limited Shippensburg to just 9-of-36 from the field (25.0%) in the opening half and had a 13-to-2 assist-to-turnover ratio. Junior
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) established a career-high with seven assists in the first half alone. She would finish the contest with ten to become the first player since December 30, 2012, to record at least ten helpers in a game (Dana Wieller, 11, at Philadelphia).
Â
Shippensburg trimmed the lead to eight, 45-37, with 5:03 left in the third quarter before Sadowski took over again. Bloomsburg outscored the Raiders, 17-6, over the final five minutes of the frame with the redshirt senior contributing ten of those points during the stretch.
Â
Sadowski entered the final quarter with 33 points – already a career-high – and promptly scored the Huskies' first eight points of the final stanza to set the new school record. Her layup with 7:49 left in regulation tied the mark and her bucket with 7:20 left set the new high. She added two more free throws with just over three minutes remaining before being pulled with the Huskies ahead by 29 points, 81-52, at the time.
Â
Ross finished with 11 points, tying a career-high with three triples, and eight rebounds. Freshman
Julia Gantz (Havertown/Archbishop John Carroll) chipped in with nine points while Klunk had six points, six rebounds, and ten assists. Junior
Kristie Costantino (Norristown/Archbishop John Carroll) posted a career-high six helpers for Bloomsburg, which finished with a season-high 28 assists as a team.
Â
But, the night belonged to Sadowski, who scored 12 in the first, seven in the second, 14 in the third, and ten in the fourth for her 43 points. Her eight rebounds also put her over 500 boards for her career to become just the 14th player in program history to have 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. She also became just the second player at Bloomsburg (Colleen Kegerreis, 2005-09) to have 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 150 blocked shots.
Â
The Huskies shot 35-of-67 from the field (52.2%) and 13-of-14 from the foul line (92.9%). Bloomsburg also outrebounded Shippensburg, 40-38 – the second game in a row that the Huskies have held the rebounding edge.
Â
Morgan Griffith had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead three Raiders in double figures.
Â
Bloomsburg will be looking to extend its winning streak to a season-long four games on Saturday, January 30, when it travels to East Stroudsburg. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The Huskies defeated the Warriors, 73-52, at Nelson Field House on December 1.
