Ground Game Lifts Football To 35-14 Victory Over East Stroudsburg Saturday

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University football team scored 35 second-half points and ran for a season-high 283 yards en route to a 35-14 victory over visiting East Stroudsburg University on a windy Saturday afternoon at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium. The win, which snapped a two-game losing streak, improved the Huskies to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings. The Warriors dropped to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in divisional play.

Senior Lawrence Elliott Jr. (Utica, N.Y./Thomas R. Proctor) collected his fifth 100-yard effort of the season by finishing with 124 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. It also marked the fourth time this season that Elliott Jr. has had three rushing scores in a game - all of which have tied his career-high. Redshirt senior Joe Parsnik (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) finished one yard shy of his season-high by racking up 89 yards on 16 carries, including a season-long 43-yard burst late in the third quarter.

On the flip side, the Huskies' defense limited the PSAC's leading rusher, Robert Healy, to just 80 yards on 19 carries - four yards more than his season-low total of 76 yards in the Warriors' 31-14 loss at Shippensburg. Bloomsburg did hold Healy to a season-low 109 all-purpose yards on Saturday afternoon as the redshirt senior tailback added four catches for 29 yards out of the backfield. His previous season-low was 124 all-purpose yards in the loss to the Raiders.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Duffy Gilhool (Upper Chichester, Pa./Chichester) made his first collegiate start under center and moved the ball efficiently for the Huskies. He completed 13-of-20 passes for 144 yards and added 65 yards and his first collegiate rushing touchdown on 14 carries.

The windy conditions certainly created havoc in the opening half as neither team was able to put points on the scoreboard. The teams combined to miss three field goals in the opening half - two by the Huskies - and each team managed just 118 yards of total offense in the opening thirty minutes of action. Freshman Kyle Butts (Clarksville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had the first opportunity as he attempted a 40-yard field goal with 7:20 left in the first quarter but missed wide left in the swirling wind. East Stroudsburg's Nicolas Ruiz was short from 45 yards out on the Warriors' opening drive of the second quarter and then redshirt sophomore Ryan Abbott (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School) missed wide right from 28 yards away on Bloomsburg's ensuing possession. Abbott's field goal attempt appeared to be right on the money but then a large gust carried the ball wide of the right upright to keep the game scoreless.

Bloomsburg, however, ran wild on the Warriors' defense in the second half. After being held to 76 yards on 23 carries in the opening thirty minutes, the Huskies amassed 207 yards on only 26 carries in the final two quarters - averaging nearly eight yards per carry - and scored four times on the ground.

On the opening possession of the third quarter, the Huskies drove 58 yards on ten plays with Gilhool calling his own number on a four-yard touchdown run for his first collegiate rushing score. Abbott added the point after and the Huskies led 7-0 with 9:16 left in the third quarter.

Bloomsburg's defense forced a punt on East Stroudsburg's opening drive of the third quarter. However, the punt into the stiff wind from Sam O'Brien traveled only 17 yards which gave the Huskies excellent field position from their own 40 yard line. Gilhool connected with redshirt senior Chad Hoffman (Drums, Pa./Hazleton) on a 12-yard gain to the Warriors' 48 on the first play of the drive. The next play resulted in Elliott Jr.'s first rushing touchdown of the game - a 48-yard scamper through a big hole up the middle and then down the right sideline to give the Huskies, after Abbott's point after, a 14-0 lead with 6:17 remaining in the third quarter.

After another short punt by the Warriors into the gusty wind, the Huskies once again took advantage on their next drive. Parsnik had the big play of the possession with a 43-yard burst that he nearly broke for a touchdown up the right sideline. East Stroudsburg's Andre' Gray made the touchdown saving tackle, around the ankles, at the Warriors' 11. The next play saw Elliott Jr. go nearly untouched for 11 yards to paydirt to give the Huskies a 21-0 advantage, after Abbott's point after, with 1:51 remaining in the third quarter.

The Warriors would make things interesting, however, with back-to-back touchdowns to start the fourth quarter. Healy got East Stroudsburg on the board with his 17th rushing touchdown of the season - a five-yard plunge into the endzone with 14:12 left. Ruiz added the extra point to cut the Huskies' lead to 21-7. Then, after a Will Wagner (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) punt, the Warriors marched down the field again, going 72 yards in only 71 seconds, capped off by a 37-yard touchdown pass from DiGiorgio to Nolan Ridgway. Ruiz, again, added the point after and, all of a sudden, the Huskies' lead was 21-14 with 10:05 left in regulation.

Bloomsburg, then, put together the drive of the game to essentially seal the victory. Gilhool and company methodically drove 75 yards on 15 plays that took eight minutes and five seconds off the clock. The Huskies converted two third downs and one fourth down during the possession that was capped off by Elliott Jr.'s third rushing touchdown of the game - a 13-yard run around left end into the corner of the endzone. The touchdown was the senior's 17th of the season, tying him with Healy for the PSAC lead. Abbott added the point after and the Huskies regained a 14-point lead, 28-14, with just 2:02 remaining.

East Stroudsburg made one last effort for a comeback but redshirt sophomore Dexter Jordan (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) ended those thoughts when he picked off DiGiorgio and returned it 42 yards for his first collegiate touchdown to put the icing on the cake. It was Jordan's second interception of the game and his fifth of the season which ties him for the PSAC lead with Kutztown's Jake Perry.

Bloomsburg racked up 427 yards of total offense and limited the Warriors to 342 yards of offense, with only 95 of those coming on the ground. It was just the second time this season that the Huskies have held an opponent to under 100 yards rushing and was just the second time that East Stroudsburg has been held to under 100 yards on the ground.

In addition to Elliott Jr.'s 124 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, he also added team-highs in catches (4) and receiving yards (43) to finish with 167 all-purpose yards. He passed Sean Smith (1993-96) for fourth on the school's all-time list with 4,794 all-purpose yards and now needs 206 to become the fourth player in school history to have 5,000 for his career.

Redshirt senior tight end Nate Hoenl (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) tied a career-high with three catches for 25 yards - none bigger than his seven-yard diving catch on fourth-and-four during the Huskies' eight-minute drive in the fourth quarter.

DiGiorgio finished the day completing 22-of-39 for 247 yards and one touchdown but was picked off twice - both by Jordan. Tim Wilson led the Warrior receiving corps with eight catches for 92 yards.

Defensively, redshirt senior Andrew Harris (Bethlehem, Pa./Whitehall) led the Huskies with nine tackles and a tackle for a loss. Senior Jarell Boyd-Ross (Pittsburgh, Pa./Dickinson (N.J.)) added eight stops while redshirt sophomore Chris Gary (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had a career-high six tackles to go along with 1.5 sacks. He now leads the PSAC with 9.5 sacks this season and is four shy of Larry Webster's school-record of 13.5 set during the 2012 campaign.

Dakota Everett led East Stroudsburg with 12 tackles and two tackles for a loss.

Bloomsburg will be back on the road next Saturday, October 29, when it makes the short trip to Lock Haven to square off against the Bald Eagles. Kickoff from Hubert Jack Stadium is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
