BLOOMSBURG—The number two ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team beat seventh-ranked Bloomsburg University in a shootout (3-0) on Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams. It was the second straight year the matchup was settled in a shootout.

Before the game the Huskies recognized their eight seniors on the 2016 team: Peyton Shockley (Milford, Del./Milford), Stephanie Halsted (Fairfax Station, Va./South County), Sam Peters (Harrisburg, Pa./Mifflin County), Eleanor Kirby (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley), Lexi Roth (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus), Laura Gerhard (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua), Alexis Carroll (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South) and Lindsay Cassel (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin).

From the start it was a battle between two longtime rivals. The opening half saw both teams taking four shots, while the Raiders held a slight edge in penalty corners, 8-6.

In the second half Bloomsburg came out on the attack getting a penalty corner and two shots, one of which was blocked, in the opening three minutes, but the game remained scoreless. With under 15 minutes to play, Shippensburg pushed the attack picking up five penalty corners and taking five shots in a ten-minute stretch. Bloomsburg goalie Lindsay Cassel (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin), though, made four saves in that time frame to keep the game knotted at 0-0. In the final seconds of regulation Cassel made a diving save to force overtime.

In the first overtime Shippensburg had three early shot attempts with Cassel saving one, one going wide and Alexis Carroll (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South) making a defensive save on the third. The Huskies, meanwhile, had two shot attempts, but did not score. Late in the period the Raiders', off a penalty corner, Kyle Huffman had a crease open on the left side of the goal and let a shot go. Cassel, though, made a beautiful stick save sending the game to a second overtime.

In the second overtime the Huskies Eleanor Kirby (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) had a shot from the left center of the circle, but her attempt hit the left post keeping it 0-0. For Shippensburg, its five shots were also all off the mark with Cassel coming up with two saves.

In the shootout each team would get five attempts with the winner being the team making the most goals. Shippensburg went first with Rajchel Moore connecting with a score. For Bloomsburg Sam Peters (Harrisburg, Pa./Mifflin County)' shot was initially blocked by Raiders' goalie Ally Mooney, but her follow-up was no good.

Shippensburg's second attempt was by Katelyn Grazan who connected with a shot to the left side of the cage. Bloomsburg's second attempt by Abby Sauder (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) was wide right giving the Raiders a 2-0 lead.

Emily Barnard took Shippensburg's third attempt with Cassel making the save, while Bloomsburg's Peyton Shockley (Milford, Del./Milford) was wide on the Huskies third attempt.

The fourth attempt would decide the game. A goal for Shippensburg would make its lead insurmountable and Kyle Huffman came through making the shootout score 3-0.

For Bloomsburg, Cassel finished with 12 saves, while Mooney had stopped eight shots for the Raiders.

Bloomsburg is now 12-6, 6-4 in the PSAC, while Shippensburg is now 16-2, 9-1 in the PSAC. Both teams will advance to the PSAC playoffs which start on Tuesday. The Huskies, the number five seed, will play at Millersville, the fourth seed, while the second-seeded Raiders get a first round bye.
