MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The eighth-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team saw its 2016 season come to an end on Tuesday afternoon as it suffered a 2-0 loss at fourth-ranked Millersville in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Quarterfinals. The Huskies ended the season with a 12-7 overall record while the Marauders advance to the PSAC Semifinals with a 15-4 mark.
Millersville's Margaret Thorwart proved to be the difference as she scored both goals for the Marauders - her fifth and sixth tallies of the season.
Her first goal came midway through the first half when she banged home a rebound off of an initial save from senior goalkeeper
Lindsay Cassel (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin). She added her second goal just under six minutes into the second half off of a penalty corner taken by Olivia Hershey.
Bloomsburg made a last-ditch effort at a comeback as it had three shots and two penalty corners in less than a minute late in the second half. But, Millersville goalkeeper Samantha Rumler and the Marauder defense thwarted all of the Huskies' opportunities during the stretch.
The Huskies managed only five shots in the contest - two each from senior
Stephanie Halsted (Fairfax Station, Va./South County) and junior
MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove), and one from senior
Lexi Roth (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus). Rumler stopped three shots to earn the victory. Millersville had a dozen shots - six in each half - with Cassel turning aside seven shots in her final start of a brilliant four-year career.
Millersville also held a substantial 12-4 edge in penalty corners.
The Huskies will say goodbye to eight seniors -
Peyton Shockley (Milford, Del./Milford),
Stephanie Halsted (Fairfax Station, Va./South County),
Sam Peters (Harrisburg, Pa./Mifflin County),
Eleanor Kirby (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley),
Lexi Roth (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus),
Laura Gerhard (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua),
Alexis Carroll (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South), and
Lindsay Cassel (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin).
