Men's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker To Pitt-Johnstown In PSAC Opener

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's basketball was a mere 1.3 seconds away from pulling off a stunning comeback against visiting Pitt-Johnstown in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener at Nelson Field House on Saturday afternoon. However, the Mountain Cats' Dale Clancy had other ideas.

Clancy drove coast-to-coast and rattled home a runner in the paint with 1.3 seconds remaining to lift Pitt-Johnstown to a 71-70 victory over Bloomsburg and to hand the Huskies their first loss of the season. Bloomsburg dropped to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the PSAC while the Mountain Cats improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Trailing by nine points, 67-58, with 3:42 left in regulation, the Huskies went on a 12-2 run to take a 70-69 advantage with ten seconds left after junior Alex Prislupsky (Olyphant, Pa./Mid-Valley) nailed a deep three-pointer to give the hosts their first lead since going ahead 33-31 just 90 seconds into the second half. But, after a Pitt-Johnstown timeout, Clancy drove the length of the floor and got his runner to rattle around the cage before dropping through to give the Mountain Cats the one-point victory.

Redshirt junior Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) had a look from just beyond half court but the shot was off the mark.

Prislupsky had a career-high 19 points to pace four Huskies in double figures. His previous high was 17 in an 86-76 loss at Clarion on December 16, 2014. The junior set a new career-best in field goals made after going 7-of-10 from the floor. He also tied a career-high with five three-pointers on Saturday, knocking down 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Junior Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School (Highland CC)) continued his fast start to the season with his first career double-double. He had ten points and ten rebounds with six of his boards on the offensive glass. Senior Donell Diggs (Washington, D.C./Takoma Academy (Prince George's CC)) added a season-high 11 points while redshirt junior Karonn Davis (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends' Central (Niagara Univ.)) had ten in the loss.

The notable omission from the double-digit point-scorers was Mortellite who finished with just eight points on 2-of-9 shooting. He did tie a career-high with six assists and also added five rebounds but it was just the second time in his last 41 games that he failed to reach double figures in scoring.

The game was close throughout as the lead changed six times and was tied on eight different occasions.

Bloomsburg raced out to its biggest lead of the game, 10-4, just after the first media timeout thanks to a quick six points from Rose. Pitt-Johnstown's Levi Masua hit back-to-back shots before Mortellite knocked down his first of two three-pointers on the afternoon to give the Huskies a 13-8 lead with 12:17 left in the opening half. A.J. Leahey and Jake Laravie combined to score the next five points for the visitors to tie the game at 13-13 with 10:21 remaining.

The teams exchanged baskets over the next two minutes before redshirt sophomore Darius Robinson-Wallace (Philadelphia, Pa./Delaware Valley Charter) hit a three-pointer and junior Carnell McGirt (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic (Valley Forge Military Academy)) buried a jumper to give the Huskies a 23-18 advantage with 7:07 remaining in the opening half. However, Pitt-Johnstown went on a 13-5 run over the next five minutes to take its largest lead of the first half, 31-28, with two minutes left. Diggs scored the final points of the half with a jumper as the Mountain Cats took a one-point lead to the locker room at halftime.

The visitors started fast in the second half, going on a 16-8 run to take a 47-38 lead with 12:50 left after Laravie buried a three-pointer. The Huskies, however, got right back in the game with eight straight points - five from Davis and three from junior Khyree Hunt-Hawkins (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington (Baltimore City CC)) - to cut the Pitt-Johnstown lead to 47-46 with 11:32 left in regulation. The Mountain Cats pulled away again, scoring 14 of the next 19 points to extend their lead to 61-51 with 6:24 remaining.

After falling behind 67-58 with 3:42 left, the Huskies started their final comeback. Diggs nailed a jumper and then connected on a pair of foul shots to cut the lead to five, 67-62, with 2:40 left. Prislupsky converted a layup before Isaac Vescovi scored at the other end to keep the Pitt-Johnstown lead at five with 1:35 left. Davis nailed his only triple of the game to pull the Huskies to within 69-67 with 1:20 remaining.

Mortellite appeared to have tied the game at 69-69, and had the potential for a three-point play, when he banked home a layup with 50 seconds left in regulation. However, the redshirt junior was whistled for the offensive foul which gave the ball back to Pitt-Johnstown. At the other end, however, a moving screen call went against the visitors, giving the ball back to the Huskies, and setting up the Prislupsky three-pointer and then the eventual game-winner from Clancy.

Bloomsburg shot a season-low 39.7% from the field (25-of-63) but did hit 10-of-24 from long range (41.7%) to tie a season-high in triples. The Mountain Cats, meanwhile, shot 47.7% from the field (31-of-65) and hit 6-of-20 (30.0%) from beyond the arc.

The visitors had four players in double figures, led by Leahey who finished with 25 points. The hero, Clancy, finished with just four points on 2-of-9 shooting but did have eight assists and seven rebounds for the Mountain Cats.

Pitt-Johnstown held a 39-33 edge in rebounding on the afternoon.

The Huskies return to action on Sunday afternoon when they entertain 24th-ranked IUP at Nelson Field House. Start time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
